s/o John Mitts and Sarah Conyers
grandson of Adam and Elizabeth Alkire Mitts.
Adam Mitts came to America from Germany prior to 1774 and it is believed that his name may have been originally spelled "Metz".

Squire Jefferson Mitts, John and Sarah's third son was born Sept. 28 1817. Squire married Nancy Ann Cames in Burton, Illinois on March 7, 1837. They purchased 50 acres of land south of Burton for $60 and built a small log cabin. All of their 12 children (6 boys &: 6 girls) were born in their log cabin. Burton, Illinois is a small town in Adams County near Quincy, Illinois. Squire worked their small farm and Nancy, as you can tell, was kept busy raising a family. William Jackson, Squire and Nancy's oldest son, enlisted in the Union Army in 1861 and served under General Sherman during the Civil War. He was with Sherman on his march to the sea. Service records list William in the 50th Infantry and he was discharged July 13, 1865. He then moved to Missouri. In the book titled "History of Adams County" W. J. (William Jackson), J. A. and Charles W. Mitts are listed as serving in the 50th Infantry. J. A. and Charles W. I believe were William's cousins.
