Norma J. Nurminen
Dateline: Ashtabula, OH
STUART, Fla. '97 Norma J. Nurminen (Gran, Straw), age 85, of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Stuart, Fla., passed away peacefully on Nov. 20, 2013, at her home in Stuart.
She was born Dec. 8, 1927, in Andover, Ohio, to Betty C. Straw (Meikle) and Fred D. Straw. Then the family moved to Ashtabula when Norma was young. She graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1945, then went on to Ashtabula Business College.
Norma worked at Farmers Bank, Society Bank and Keybank. She retired from Key Bank as their first female bank officer. She went on to work as a bookkeeper at Brockway Marine, retiring in 1987. Norma also worked in the Vintage Jewelry and antique business with her daughter, Lynne, for the next 25+ years.
Norma was a member of the First Christian Church. She also belonged to many organizations - The American Banking Association, Lake Erie Marine Trader Association, Ashtabula Garden Club, Zonta Club, Power Squadron, Red Book Yacht Club and Riverside Yacht Club.
Norma loved boating, water skiing, fishing, collecting shells, snowmobiling, dancing and partying with her husband William, and ice skating and shopping for jewelry and antiques with her daughter.
She was a very loving, loyal, warm, giving and happy person who always had a smile for everyone.
She is survived by her beloved husband, William "Bill" Nurminen; her daughter, Lynne Wilkins (Gran, Trask); grandson, Trevor Trask; great-grandchildren, Connor and Courtney; and her great-great-granddaughter, Addisyn, all of whom she greatly loved.
Norma was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Straw; her father, Fred Straw; and her in-laws, Pearl and William Nurminen.
There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial at Kister Marina (near Ashtabula Yacht Club), off Bridge St. in Ashtabula Harbor on Wednesday, Sept. 24th, from 3 to 5 p.m. It always has been Norma's wish to be happily remembered and to be "by the water".
For those who wish, please remember Norma with a donation to the ASPCA. Her many pets through the years were her constant joy.
