James Kennish, son of William and Catherine Kennish was born June 12, 1862 near Ramsey, Isle of Man and passed away at St. Joseph Hospital, aged 84y and 6 mos. when he was 8 yrs of age he came with the family to Holt County. They settled in the Liberty neighborhood, and Mr. Kennish lived his life in this community. In 1897 he was united in marriage to Miss Gertrude Saunders of Skidmore. To this union were born three children, Edward Saunders who died at the age of 9 mos, Mrs. Lois Colwell of Mound City and John S. Kennish of Webster Groves, MO.
Mr. Kennish united with the Minnesota Valley Church about 35 years ago and was a faithful and liberal member.
As a young man he became interested in the deveoplement of fine livestock and was widely known as a successful stock breeder. He was a member of the Poland China Association of this district.
One of his most pronounced characteristics was his readiness to assist in any community enterprise, and to help others, especially young people.
For a period of years he was manager of the McKee section near Mound City for an estate in Kentucky. During a visit one of the owners handed Mr. Kennish a paper saying the family wished to express their appreciation of his services. thids tribute expresses the feelings of all who knew Mr. Kennish:
"To my friend Jim Kennish
I want to express to you while you are here to know, my appreciation of your many admirable qualities- your genuine honesty, your quiet dignity, your dependability, (your generous magnanimity, hyour considered careful expression), your sound philosophy of life, your abiding faith and to paraphrase in your behalf this simple but lovely prayer:
I pray thee lord lead him on High;
If he the way should fear to take
I pray thee lord do not forsake.
this I ask in Jesus' name.
