Sonya then attended Syracuse University, where she studied journalism, literature and graphic arts, and joined the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Upon graduating summa cum laude in 1940, she worked in graphic design and marketing for General Electric and Mohawk Mills in Amsterdam, N.Y. Sonya married Gerard N. "Jerry" Koehler in 1942, and then began to raise a family in Schenectady, N.Y., followed by a move to Shelbyville, Ind. They eventually moved to Tarboro where they resided from 1968 until 2006.
