This book has no cover, and no index, and no author. I bought it on Ebay; it just has the insides, but it is full of Indiana biographies. I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don't know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it. Typed by Lora Radiches:
Surnames in this biography are: Wheeler, Robinson, Greeley, Holton, Knight, Tice, Schaible, Hughes, Straw, Verplank, FRED Y. WHEELER. A consecutive and complete record of the Wheeler family would probably tell more of the vital history of Lake County, Indiana, than could be learned from any other family annals of Northern Indiana. The man given credit for being the first settler in Lake County was Solon Robinson, who was distinguished on other accounts than merely the first to arrive and locate in this extreme northwest corner of Indiana. Solon Robinson at one time was associate editor and part owner with Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune. A daughter of Solon Robinson became the mother of Belle Holton, the mother of Fred Y. Wheeler. The paternal grandfather of Fred Y. Wheeler was Col. John Wheeler, an early pioneer of Lake County, where he acquired a large body of land. He was one of the military officers who went from the county at the time of the Civil war, and lost his life in the great battle of Gettysburg in 1862. He is buried on the Gettysburg battlefield, and his name is on one of the great monuments erected by the Government to the brave men, who fell in those early days of July, 1862. Fred Y. Wheeler, who keeps the family name in close touch with public affairs through his position as postmaster of Crown Point and publisher of the Lake County Star, was born at Crown Point March 20, 1874, son of John J. and Belle (Holton) Wheeler. His father spent all his life in Lake County, was a man of education, learned the civil engineering profession, and in the early days helped lay out the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railway between Chicago and Danville. He, too, was a soldier in the Union army, being a member of the One Hundred Sixty-third Indiana Regiment. After the war he took up newspaper work and in 1880 founded the Lake County Star, which has been published by the Wheeler family for half a century. John J. Wheeler was a leader in Republican politics in Lake County and served as postmaster of Crown Point during the Harrison administration. He was a member of the school board and a Master Mason. He died in 1917 and is buried in the Crown Point Cemetery. His wife, Belle Holton, was born and reared at Crown Point, attended local schools there and Mrs. Knight's School for Girls. She always found work to do at home and in the community and is one of the much loved older ladies of Crown Point, where she resides at the age of seventy-nine. She was the mother of four children: Harold H., who died in 1912; Fred Y.; Jennie, wife of W. P. Tice, of Crown Point; and Josephine, wife of Dr. E. L. Schaible, of Gary. Fred Y. Wheeler acquired his education in the schools of Crown Point, attending grade school and high school until he was graduated in 1893. During the years of his boyhood he came in contact with the busy newspaper office of his father, and after leaving high school was an active associate and helper in publishing of the Star. On his father's death in 1917 he took full charge as editor and publisher, and the business of the Star is still his chief concern. Mr. Wheeler for twenty-five years was secretary of the Lake County Fair Association. At different times he was given honors and responsibilities by the Republican Party organization and on April 1, 1921, was appointed postmaster of Crown Point and has held that office under the successive administrations of Harding, Coolidge and Hoover. He is a member of the Commercial Club, Chamber of Commerce, is a thirty second degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner, being a member of Lake Lodge No. 151, A. F. and A. M., the Fort Wayne Consistory, Orak Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Hammond. He is also a member of the Maccabees, Gary Press Club, and is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. His chief service at the time of the World war was rendered through his newspaper. Mr. Wheeler enjoys fishing and hunting as recreation. He married at Wheaton, Illinois, May 31, 1895, Miss Janet Hughes, daughter of Thomas and Rachel (Straw) Hughes. Her parents came from Ohio to Lake County, Indiana, in early days and were pioneer settlers in Eagle Creek Township. They are buried near Hebron, Indiana. Mrs. Wheeler is a graduate of the Hebron High School and taught for several years in Lake County until her marriage. She is a member of the Christian Science Church. Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler have a daughter, Charlotte, who graduated from the Crown Point High School in 1917, and in 1922 received the A. B. degree from Indiana University. During the next five years she was teacher of languages in the Crown Point High School. In 1930 she became the wife of Adelbert Verplank, a promising young attorney at Gary, where they reside. Mr. Verplank is a nephew of Doctor Verplank and a son of Garrett Verplank, both of Gary. Mr. Verplank graduated from the schools of Gary and from the Armour Institute of Chicago, and also attended the Yale and Harvard universities.
