Leo Albert Tobias
1922 - 2007
Leo Albert Tobias was born May 28, 1922 in Bakersfield, California, to Sam and Josephine Tobias. His father Sam was co-founder and owner of San Joaquin Tractor Company. Leo attended Kern County Union High School and went on to attend the University of Southern California. He graduated U.S.C. in 1950 from the school of Pharmacy. Leo was a well respected pharmacist in Bakersfield for 55 years. He was owner and operator of Westchester Pharmacy for 25 years and worked at several other pharmacies over the years, most recently at Lee's Mercy Plaza Pharmacy. Leo enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family. He took pleasure in cooking and was never afraid to "experiment" with a recipe. He followed U.S.C. football with a passion, never missing a chance to watch a Trojan football game. He enjoyed coaching youth sports and watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports. Over the years he coached Cub Scout baseball, AYSO soccer and JBA baseball. He enjoyed bumping into his past players, reminiscing and learning about their successes in life. Leo was a member of the Bakersfield College Athletic Foundation, Elks Club, Footprinters Association, and Knights of Columbus. He continued to serve on the Board of Directors of San Joaquin Tractor Company until his death. Leo enjoyed the most simple of life's pleasures, his family. He cherished his grandchildren and followed their successes and triumphs with a passion, He honestly believed he was blessed. Leo passed away at home with his family caring for him. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Josephine Tobias; and his brother, Robert Tobias. Survivors include his wife of 43 years Patricia; daughter, JoAnne Lingo and husband, Tom; sons, Curtis Tobias , Jeremy Tobias and wife, Susan, Jason Tobias and wife, Stephanie, Josh Tobias and wife, Justine, Justin Tobias and wife, Courtney; 21 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis Church, 900 "H" Street, Friday, September 14, 2007 at 12:00 noon. Graveside services will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd. Pallbearers will be Tom Lingo, Ben Lingo, Jake Lingo, Robert Tobias, Gilbert Straw and Carl Leach. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Romain Clerou, Gerry Collis, Dr. Carl Troia, Dave Moore, Ed Nicholson, Kenny Loewen and Gordon Wickersham. In lieu of flowers, donations in Leo's memory may be made to the Garces Memorial High School football program or your favorite charity.
