Betty Jane McDougle was born May 7, 1925, in Webster, S.D., to Ernest D. and Della (Swetlen) Barton. She was the sixth of eight children born to her parents. Betty attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1943.
Betty met her future husband, Dwaine O. McDougle in Mason City during her teen years.
While Dwaine was serving his country during World War II, Betty corresponded with him and their relationship deepened.
Betty made the decision to offer her hand by assisting with the war effort in preparing supplies for the servicemen and women in Utah and San Diego. She had the opportunity to visit Dwaine during this time in San Francisco. Following Dwaine's discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1945, the couple made plans to marry.
On July 26, 1946, Betty and Dwaine were united in marriage at the Grace United Methodist parsonage in Mason City. During the early years of their marriage, Betty was employed as a telephone operator with Bell Telephone Co.
Throughout the following years, Betty and Dwaine enjoyed dancing, fishing, constructing and finishing ten homes and became the proud parents of eight children.
Betty will be well-remembered in the Mason City area as she has been extremely active in the community, offering many personal volunteer hours toward civic causes.
She is the current M.O.C.A. Grand President in Iowa and has held several other officer positions in the M.O.C.A, is a member of the V.F.W., the V.F.W. Auxiliary, the Fireman's Auxiliary and a past Cub Scout den mother.
Betty is a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. She faithfully donated to her church and many charities.
Most recently, Betty was a familiar employee at Murph's Restaurant in Mason City, where she worked for 20 years as a hostess, retiring in 1994.
Betty is described by her children as a strong-willed and highly organized woman. She was a devoted wife and nurturing mother who was very accepting of religious views and people in general.
Family was foremost important to her and holidays were special at home with all the finishing touches.
She found great joy in attending her children's activities, wrote poetry, was an avid reader of science fiction and mysteries and cheered enthusiastically for the Vikings and the Twins.
Betty treasured her quiet leisure time crocheting afghans for her family and charities and solving cross word and cryptoquote puzzles.
Her children recall familiar foods that their Mom prepared for them such as Sloppy Joes, her equal-sized potato patties, Jell-O salads and deviled eggs.
Betty will be missed dearly by family and friends who have shared her life.
She is survived by her children, Steve McDougle, of Redondo Beach, Calif., Cynthia Cory (Ron Erickson), of Ames, DeAnn Straw (Mark), of Monroe, Brian McDougle (Vanette), of Mason City, Barb Sberal (Jim), of Mason City, James McDougle (Cathy), of Shorewood, Minn., and Christy Pope (Mike), of Clear Lake.
Betty will also be sadly missed by her eleven grandchildren, Nathan McDougle, Stefani McDougle, Mayen Mayen, Katie Platt, Lucas Straw, Eddie Jackson, Matthew Sberal, Jared Sberal, Emily Sberal, Zachary Pope and Jennifer Pope and many other numerous relatives and friends.
