MUSCATINE, Iowa\emdash Kenneth Hyman, 66, of Muscatine, passed away on Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at his home following a battle with cancer.
Reverend Dennis Hakes of the Walnut Park Baptist Church will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Friends of the Log Cabin.
Ken was born on Dec. 15, 1946, in Oelwein, to Albert and Laverle Roberts Hyman. He graduated from Oelwein High School in 1965, he attended State College of Iowa 1965-1967, and he attended Iowa State University 1967 \endash 1971, graduating with a B.S. in Fish and Wildlife Biology with a minor in Geology. He had achieved the Eagle Rank with the Boy Scouts of the America.
Ken was united in marriage to Barbara Besco on Aug. 12, 1978, at First Baptist Church in Russell.
Ken worked in the summer of 1971 at Iowa State University, 1971 \endash 1973 for Iowa Conservation Commission part time at Wapello Fish Hatchery and Fisheries Creel Clerk at Lake Rathbun. In 1973, Ken began full time work with the Iowa Conservation Commission at Cold Springs Biology Station, 1974-76 at Chariton Biology Station, 1976-1979 at Manchester Biology Station, 1979-1982 at Luster Heights Young Adult Conservation Corps Youth Camp (Harpers Ferry), 1982 \endash 1983 Assistant Park Ranger at Pilot Knob State Park (Forest City), 1983 \endash 1984 Park Ranger at Fort Defiance State Park (Estherville), 1984 \endash 1999 Park Ranger with the Department of Natural Resources at Wildcat Den State Park (Muscatine) and 1999 \endash 2002 Park Superintendent at Lake Darling State Park, Wildcat Den State Park, and Fairport Recreation Area.
Ken retired in 2002 only to continue to work part time 2002 \endash 2003 at Fairport Fish Hatchery, and 2003 - 2006 Muscatine County Jail as a transport officer.
Ken was a member of Sierra Club, Iowa Archeological Society, Iowa Native Plant Society, Iowa Natural Heritage Association, Iowa Ornithologists, and Iowa Prairie Network. He established Friends of Pine Creek Grist Mill in 1996. Since that time, Ken has served as Vice-President for Interpretation. For 28 years Ken volunteered as a presenter for Outdoor Education Days for many school groups. He was instrumental in organizing the Annual Heritage Day in September, chief organizer of the Wildcat Den 5K Run/Walk, as well as many other volunteer efforts at The Mill.
Ken was instrumental in reconstruction of German Methodist Old Stone Church in rural Muscatine County. Ken actively volunteered at the Fairport Fish Hatchery. He did Chainsaw carvings in the surrounding areas and for Ye Olde Country Store at New Era and for Rubber Ducky Race at Heritage Day. He started Friends of Melpine School and Ken's latest volunteer project is organizing a group to reconstruct a log cabin by Wildcat Den State Park.
Ken is survived by his wife, Barbara Hyman of Muscatine; a son, David Hyman and wife, Jennifer, of Huxley; a daughter, Sara Straw and husband, Lucas, of Emmetsburg; six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Nathan, Daniel, Caleb Hyman and Lily and Cooper Straw; and one brother, Richard Hyman and wife, Sandra, of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Laverle Hyman and a brother, Keith Hyman.
