DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) '97 Patrick Frederick, 71 years old of Davenport, died on Friday after he was hit by a vehicle.
It happened on 4th and Gaines Street as Frederick was crossing the street shortly after five in the morning. The driver hit him with her car and fled the scene. Davenport police say they found the suspect the same day. Juanita McAdams, 25 years old of Rock Island, is charged with leaving the scene of a fatality crash and having no insurance, a class D felony, which means she could face up to five years in prison.
Frederick's wife and two daughters spoke exclusively to KWQC today.
"I just don't understand how someone could leave him laying on the side of the road," said Eunice "TJ" Abernathey, one of Frederick's daughters. He was wearing his favorite St. Louis Cardinals hat that Friday. It was in the street as police investigated the scene.
"Two cops came to the door and told me," said Brenda Frederick, his wife. They met when they were 16 and have been married for 36 years. "It's hard to deal. I keep looking for him to come walking through that door," said Brenda.
Brenda, TJ, his younger daughter Laurie Kohler, and his granddaughter were all by his hospital bedside Friday while he was in a coma. They held his hand as doctors pulled Frederick off life support. "Within a minute, he was gone," said TJ. Laurie and TJ both promised Frederick they would take care of their mom.
The family is grieving the sudden loss of a beloved dad and husband and glancing over pictures and remember all the fond memories. "I know he is looking down on us," said Brenda.
On Thursday, the family is holding a funeral service at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church in Davenport. That is the church he attended and volunteered at weekly.


DAVENPORT '97 Memorial services for Patrick Frederick, 71, of Davenport will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Davenport. Inurnment will follow at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Family will greet friends on Thursday from 9 a.m., to service time at the church.
Patrick passed away on Friday, Sept. 18, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Patrick Martin Frederick was born on Feb. 22, 1944, in Davenport, the son of Nicholas and Catherine (Toher) Frederick. He married Brenda Straw on July 21, 1979, in Davenport. Patrick worked in banquet setup at the Radisson Hotel for the past 19 years.

Patrick was an avid Cardinals fan. He was a member of the A.A.R.P. and Plus 60 Club. He also volunteered at the Central Community Circle Food Pantry and St. Mark Food Pantry. Survivors include his wife, Brenda of Davenport; daughters, Eunice Abernathey, Laurie (Brett) Kohler, both of Davenport; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; brother, Daniel (Sandra) Frederick of LeClaire; a favorite niece, Vironda Dailey of Park View; and his cat Sara.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a great-great-grandson, Atreus Bowman, a brother, Nicholas, and a sister-in-law, Norine Frederick.

Memorials may be directed to the Central Community Circle Food Pantry, the St. Mark Food Pantry or the Epilepsy Foundation.
