The daughter of Johannis Meagley and Elisabeth Mowers, Hannah Lavina Meagley was baptized September 8th, 1822 in Currytown Reformed Church in Charleston, Montgomery County, New York, per a baptism record that states "Anna Levina, child of John Meagley and Elizabeth Mowers." Lavina married John D. Strew, Jr. on February 22nd, 1847, most likely in Chenango County, New York, the young couple soon thereafter migrating to Michigan with their only daughter, where they settled in Schoolcraft in Kalamazoo County. She died many years later on the family homestead in Prairie Ronde Township from complications of apoplexy. The following obituary, transcribed verbatim, was published a few days after her death:
OBITUARY.
Mrs. Lavina H. Strew, an old and most highly respected citizen of Prairie Ronde, passed away Tuesday morning. The deceased was stricken with paralysis several weeks ago, from which she only partially recovered, and which finally terminated in her death. In her departure from us the community is called upon to mourn the loss of a kind friend and neighbor and the family a most devoted and loving mother.
Lavina H. Meagley was born in the state of New York, May 12, 1823, and was married to John D. Strew February 22, 1847. She moved with her husband to Schoolcraft in 1849 and in the spring of 1870 they moved to their home in Prairie Ronde, where she died October 23, 1900, aged 77 years, 5 months and 12 days.
Three sons and one daughter were born to this union. The daughter died in infancy. The husband died ten years since. The surviving relatives are one sister in New York state, three sons and their families, who, together with numerous friends, mourn their loss. She never made a public profession of religion, but left good testimony in her recent illness that her peace with God was made. Among her last words were, "It's all right with me."
Funeral services were conducted from the home by Rev H. H. Flory of U. B. church, and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Schoolcraft.
