Born on the Stavdal farm within Stordal Parish, Beate Martha Berntsdatter was baptized on September 24th, 1854, the daughter of Bernt Knudsen and Berthe Marie Martinesdatter. She arrived from Norway in 1882, soon thereafter marrying John Frank Strew in Aberdeen, South Dakota (probably in 1885), a union that produced two children, daughter Helen and son Niles.
