Patrick Lake is my maternal grandfather. My mother Rose Lake was born at St. Kyran's Bay
They list her birth as June 1910,,,in the family we know it as May 4, 1911. She was the youngest
of the children and her father Patrick died of cancer of the stomach in 1911. My mother said she was a year and a half when her father died so the 1910 date looks more accurate. Patrick married Rebecca Foley and their children were:Jack (John), Clara, May and Rose (Anna). My grandmother, as you can imagine, had a tough time making ends meet. Among the things she did to make money were to make woolen gloves and drying fish. That wool came from sheep in or around St. Kyran's. My mother remembered 'carting'the wool for her mother before she spun it on a spinning wheel. She also told me that staples like sugar and flour were brought in from St. John's once a year. She also said that they buried all their root vegetables to preserve them. Patrick was a fisherman. I'm not familer with the politics and economics of the 'outposts' but I imagine that Patrick went out with several other men in a large rowboat to catch Cod and it was from this that they subsisted. My mother, Rose, was sent off by herself to Boston around 1920-21 to live with her siblings. She married my father Thomas Joseph Myron in Boston in 1933. They had 10 children of which I am one. My father's name was originally spelled Miron, but friction with the in-laws compelled her to change it to Myron. My father was born in St. John's NL in 1906.

Michael Collins: As far as i know, "our" Lakes were from Presque. Patrick lived in Mahaney's Cove, then moved to St.Kyran's, where he died. He had a brother John who moved to Branch. There are no Lakes in Branch as John had one son, who died as a teenager. He had two daughters. one married a Nash and the other married a Downey. John is buried in Branch. Their sister Mary married my grandfather, Peter Collins. Whether or not we are related to Mr.Paddy Lake, I don't know for sure. I've read that all Lakes in NL are from the same family, so based on that we are related somewhere along the line.
