WINDSOR, VT - Kenneth C. Cooley, Sr., 84, a longtime resident of Windsor, passed away Thursday morning, September 19, at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor, surrounded by his family. He was born November 22, 1928 in Burlington, VT. He was the son of F. Dustin and Helen (Canerdy) Cooley. He received his schooling in Windsor and graduated from Windsor High School in 1946.
He was a veteran of the US Army, stationed in Iceland during the Korean Conflict. Upon his honorable discharge in 1951, under the GI Bill, he attended and graduated from Bryant College in Providence, RI, earning his Degree in Business Administration in 1955.
He met the love of his life, Frieda B. Mills in the summer of 1954 in White River Jct., VT. They were married on July 29, 1955 in Windsor, CT. They moved to Windsor, VT in 1958 at the request of his mother, so that her grandchildren would be educated in the Windsor School system.
Mr. Cooley was employed by the State of Vermont Department of Corrections as a security supervisor at the former Vermont State Prison in Windsor. Upon the closing of the facility in 1975 he was transferred to the Northeast Correctional Facility in St. Albans. They returned to Windsor in 1981 to be closer to their family, where he worked at the Woodstock Correctional Facility and later at the Southeast State Correctional Facility in Windsor. He retired in 1997 after serving thirty six years. Following his retirement he continued to work as a temporary officer. Ken was a proud lifetime member and Past Commander of the Windsor American Legion Post #25, and served as Fifth District Commander for the State of Vermont as well as Chef de Gare of 40/8 for Vermont. He was also a member of the Rachel S. Harlow United Methodist Church in Windsor. He and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout Vermont and New Hampshire attending Legion and Auxiliary events.
He and his wife were fond of spending time at Silver Lake in Barnard when their children were young and in later years at York Beach, Maine. Ken truly enjoyed playing Santa at the annual Christmas Day dinner at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor for several years. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles with his wife. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and New England Patriots. He had a wonderful sense of humor and received his greatest pleasure by spending time with his family.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of fifty five years, Frieda B. Cooley on April 23, 2010. Survivors include three sons, K.C. (Ken) Cooley, Jr. and his wife, Judy of Shelburne, VT, Dana Cooley of Windsor and Doug Cooley of Windsor, one daughter, Cindy Trent and her husband, Brad of Bountiful, Utah, five grandchildren, Dan Cooley and his wife, Amy of South Pasadena, CA, Dustin Trent of Salt Lake City, Utah, Ellie Trent of Bountiful, Utah, Luke Trent of Salt Lake City, and James Davis of Milton, VT, five great grandchildren, Clementine, Penelope and Gwenyth Cooley, all of South Pasadena, Andrew Trent of Salt Lake City and Riley Davis of Milton, VT, one brother, Carroll R. Cooley and his wife, Beverly of Melbourne, FL, several nephews and nieces, including Linda Dion and her husband, Bobby of Ascutney, VT.
Visitation will be held Monday evening, September 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 24 at 11:00 AM at the Rachel S. Harlow United Methodist Church in Windsor with the Rev. Ken White, Pastor, officiating. Committal services with military honors will follow in the Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor. Memorial contributions may be made to the Upper Valley Humane Society at 300 Old Route 10, Enfield, NH 03748.
