SULLIVAN (Whelan), Loretta Mary
The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, March 1, 2008
SULLIVAN (Whelan), Loretta Mary - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and matriarch Loretta Mary Sullivan (Whelan), 89, of Halifax, on Thursday, February 28, 2008, in Maplestone Enhanced Care. Born in Searston, N.L., she was a daughter of Martina (Curley) and William Whelan. She was a graduate of Memorial University with a teaching certificate. After a lifetime of raising nine children, she found herself in her late fifties working with Canada Post and in many ways, embracing the union philosophy that spoke to her sense of justice. A strong Irish woman, Loretta was a force to be reckoned with in many ways. She loved a party and the celebration of life with family and friends.
She is survived and missed by her children, Constance (Jim), Kenneth, Anita (Roger), Patricia (John), James, Barbara (Laird), Michael (Shirley), Thomas and Pamela (Gregor), as well as by 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and sisters-in-law, Rosemary Whelan, Carrie Whelan and Pauline Walker, Newfoundland. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, James Joseph Sullivan; brothers, Loyola, Francis, James, William, and Basil; sisters, Florence, Mae, Anita, and Rita. Visitation will be held in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, on Monday, March 3, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held in St. Agnes Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 4, at 10 a.m., with burial to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. The family extends their thanks to Mom's caregivers at Maplestone, and Dr. Robert Brown and Dr. Renault. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. E-mail condolences may be sent to: condolences.snow@ns.aliantzinc.ca
