It is with great sadness that the family of the late Garrett John McCarthy announce his passing at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital on November 20th, 2018 at the age of 89 years.
Gar (as he was affectionately known) was a proud and independent man who never wanted to be indebted to anyone. He worked hard to support his eleven children and beloved wife. Any free time he had, he was happy to spend in the home he built, with his own hands, with his father by his side. He was overjoyed when grandchildren and then great grandchildren started to enter the picture. He loved babies and would sit them on his knee and tap his toes to a Newfie beat. He was married to Marguerite (or "Maggie" or "Mom") for 65 ½ years. They were separated only a few times and only recently for medical reasons. Neither of them liked it very much. We will miss him for his impatience with da government, his love of the Blue Jays, a drop of whiskey, and his love for his family.
Garrett leaves to mourn his wife Marguerite, sister Nora Young, eleven children, six sons: Larry (Kathy) McCarthy , Paul (Glenda) McCarthy, Glen (Cindy) McCarthy, Gary McCarthy, Tony (Shelley) McCarthy, Perry (Lori Park) McCarthy, five daughters: Yvonne (Rick) Bannon, Ursula (Lewis) Hann, Sharon McCarthy, Carol McCarthy, Kelly (Tom) McCarthy, seventeen grandchildren : Eric, Stephanie, Sarah, Luke, Jacinta, Madison, Kyle, Alex, Kassidy, Ethan, Marcus, Jonathan, Sydney, Emma, Emily, Niall, Kelsey, great grandchildren: Oliver, Quinn, Adeline, Rosalie and a large circle of relatives, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Agnes McCarthy, brother, Bill, daughter Jacinta, and a circle of long-time neighbors and friends.
Visitation will take place at Russell's Funeral Home, 57 Prince Rupert Drive, Stephenville, on Thursday, November 22nd, 2018 from 7-9 pm and Friday, November 23rd, 2018 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral service will take place Saturday, November 24th, 2018 at 10am at St. Stephen's Parish, Stephenville with interment to follow at the Hillside Cemetery on the Hansen Highway, Stephenville.

Garrett married Marguerite Walsh, daughter of Thomas Walsh and Bridget. (Marguerite Walsh was born on 19 Oct 1927, died on 29 Mar 2023 in Corner Brook Long Term Care Centre - Corner Brook, Newfoundland and was buried in Hillside Interfaith Cemetery - Stephenville, Newfoundland.)
