bullet  General Notes:

HUDSON FALLS * Edward F. Brown Sr., 88, died on March 17, 2007, at Fort Hudson Nursing Home following a short battle with cancer. He was a loving father and husband whose joy was spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and family. A man who lived his life with integrity and bravery, his kind heart was an inspiration to his family and all who met him. Ed will be greatly missed.
Ed was born on Jan. 18, 1919, in Poultney, Vt., the son of Roy and Alta (Moore) Brown.
He received his honorary high school diploma from Granville Central School in 2003, for which he was extremely proud. Honorary degrees are granted as a result of Operation Recognition, a government program established in 2000, which gives any World War II veteran who was unable to complete high school because of the war educational credit for "knowledge and experience obtained while on active duty during World War II."
He married Evelyn LaMere, the love of his life, on Aug. 29, 1937. They had been blissfully married for almost 62 years when she died on Aug. 15, 1998.
Ed entered the United States Army on Jan. 26, 1944. He was in General Patten's 3rd Army, 137th Infantry as a truck driver carrying ammunition to the front line. His rank was Private First Class. Ed was at the Landing on Normandy and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Before his death, Ed and Russell Bowen of Lomax, Ill., were the only two remaining members of the 137th Infantry. On Oct. 27, 1945, Ed was honorably discharged with the European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Before and after World War II, Ed worked at Griffin Lumber Company. He then worked for Norwalk Vault, where he labored for over 35 years until his retirement in 1982. During retirement, he worked part-time at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home and as a security officer.
Ed was a communicant at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Hudson Falls, a member of the Herschel-Argyle Masons, and a past member of the Hartford Volunteer Fire Company.
Besides his wife and parents, Ed was predeceased by his son, Edward Brown Jr.; sister, Coretta Aldous; brothers, Theodore (Ted), William, and Henry Brown; in-laws, Walter and Lucy (Parker) LaMere; and brothers-in-law, George Holcomb, Calvin Gilmore, and Walter Kenneth LaMere.
Ed is survived by his daughters, Sharon Burt and her husband, Eugene, of Fort Edward and Margaret "Peggy" Spaulding and her husband, Christopher, of Peru, N.Y.; his sons, David Brown and his wife, Darlene, of Hudson Falls, Michael Brown and his wife, Dorothy, of South Glens Falls, Walter Brown and his wife, Joyce, of Queensbury, Gregory Brown and his wife, Susan, of Hartford, and Kevin Brown and his wife, Jodie, of Queensbury; his daughter-in-law, Irene Brown of Deltona, Fla.,; his sisters, Jenny Holcomb of Granville, Shirley Gilmore of Fort Edward, and Beverly Mead and her husband, Calvin, of Granville; his brothers, Roy Brown and his wife, Laura, of South Glens Falls, Lawrence Brown and his wife, Shirley, of Poultney, Vt., and Harold Brown and his wife, Linda, of Yulee, Fla.; and his sisters-in-law, Margaret Maynard of Hudson Falls and Jean Brown of Fort Edward.
