Christopher Hynes
January 16, 1958 - December 25, 2020
With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden and tragic passing of Christopher Harold Hynes. Chris passed away at his home on December 25th, 2020 after spending his favourite day, Christmas, with his family. Predeceased by his father Joseph; brothers Bobby and Paul. He leaves to mourn his mother Dorothy; his brothers and sisters: Terry, Tommy (Jenny), Frances (Eddy Wiseman), Carolyn (Terry Peddle), Lon, Maureen, Vicky (Derek Norman), Debbie (Brian Scott) and Sean (Joann); his loving children Madelaine (Michael Cahill) and Jacob; granddaughters: Frances and Charlotte; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Chris was born on the Port au Port Peninsula, Newfoundland in 1958. The family relocated to St. John's several years after his birth, but Chris would fondly recount his early years surrounded by nature and extended family on the west coast.

Raised in a house filled with music, it was no surprise Chris found his passion in singing, songwriting and performing. Well known within the local music scene for his exceptional songwriting skills and beautiful voice, his impact on fellow artists became evident with Great Big Sea releasing their rendition of his song "Penelope" in 2002 and later being discovered and covered, once again, by American artist Mike Aiken in 2018. After garnering much positive attention during the 1990's while performing with his brother Sean as the Hynes Brothers in Toronto, Chris later moved home to St. John's to be closer to his children and mother.

He will be lovingly remembered for his unique wit, sense of humour, infinite knowledge of history and his tremendous musical talent.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association are encouraged in lieu of flowers.
