Mary Elizabeth Scott Straw, a resident of Leigh Hall, formerly of Willoughby,
went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 25, 1999, in Norfolk.
Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., Mrs. Straw, known as "Betty", had lived in Norfolk
since 1943. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Mae Scott, and the
granddaughter of the late R.D. Whittle of Knoxville, Tenn. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Frederick Carroll Straw.
Mrs. Straw was a member of Episcopal Church of the Advent. She was past
president of the Willoughby Beach Garden Club, a member of the Women's
Republican Club and a former Girl Scout leader.
Survivors include her daughter, Thelma Straw of New York; her son, Robert
Whittle Straw of Urbanna, Va.; four grandchildren, Melanie Fox of Harrisonburg,
Va., David Straw of Richmond, Robert Fred Straw of Zurich, Switzerland, and the
Rev. Matthew Straw of Elm City, N.C.; and several great-grandchildren, Preston,
Emily, Mary Beth, Kathryn, Anne Christine, Sarah and Francesca.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday by the Rev. Bob Miller at Church of
the Advent in Pinewell, 9620 Sherwood Place, Norfolk. Burial will follow in
Forest Lawn Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions
to the church. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is handling arrangements.
Her family and friends will miss her greatly. May she rest in peace.

Mary married Fred Carroll Straw, son of John Frankling Straw and Gertrude M. Whipple. (Fred Carroll Straw was born on 6 Jul 1900 in Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, died on 27 Dec 1974 in Hampton City, Virginia and was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk City, Virginia.)
