"God giveth His belowed sleep"
At Ironville, Crown Point, New York, on the morning of April 14th 1902, Mrs. Jane Barton Fitch fell asleep in Jesus at the advanced age of 87 years. She had been in feeble health for several years, but her last illness confined her to her bed only one week, when death claimed her and she peacefully entered the "Rest Eternal." She was bereft of her husband, Alonzo Fitch, 28 years ago, and during that period of time has had her home sustained by her son-in-law Hiram Underhill, who with Mrs. Underhill have labored unceasingly in their endeavor to render her lonely days bright and cheerful, and done all that loving hands can do to administer to her every want and and give the care that her feeble state required. She was a loved and loving mother, of a cheerful disposition and expressed much gratitude for every kindness and favor granted her. Mrs. Mary Murray has been with them and aided in giving their mother care.
Mrs. Fitch was born in Bolton, Warren county and resided there until the death of her parents. She had one sister and two brothers all of whom have been dead several years. Her brother, Hiram Barton, was mayor of the city of Buffalo for several years, and her brother, Reuben Barton, who in early life resided at Ironville, removed to Rouses Point and had the position of Custom House officer for several years. Both his and his wife's remains were brought to Ironville, the place of their choice for interment.
Mrs. Fitch was the mother of nine children, all attained to woman and manhood, married and had families, and of the number only four survive: Mrs. Hiram Underhill, Mrs. Jane Gunnison, Mrs. Mary Murray and Hiram Fitch, all of Crown Point, New York. She also leaves eleven grandchildren and several great grandchildren, whom she dearly loved, and rejoiced at the approach of spring and was anticipating the coming of summer, when as was the usual custom, the grandchildren and great grandchildren always found a welcome at grandma's house for a stay of several weeks. She could hardly wait for their coming. (tear in the page)
To Mrs. Fitch home was her dearest place, she loved her home and her family, and she was a great admirer of flowers, and always cultivated a variety and abundance of them, as long as her health would permit.
Mrs. Lizzie North, her granddaughter from Amsterdam, New York, on her attendance at the funeral, brought with her 87 pink and white roses numbering her age, a gift from the family, and the floral offerings from her granddaughters Mrs. Henry Parker and Mrs. E. C. Merchant of Ticonderoga, consisting of white carnations, pinks and a beautiful lot of cut flowers are the gifts of Mrs. Clayton Wyman and Mrs. Clark Taft, all of which spoke louder than words of the venerable mother and grandmother who had passed away with unfaltering trust in her Redeemer.
Her funeral was held from the 2nd Congregational church of which she was a member, with Reverend Mr. Parsons officiating. His discourse was based on the words "I have fought a good fight" taken from 2nd Timothy 4th chapter 7th verse pouring forth a lesson of faith and consolation which will not be easily forgotten, and the dear weeping kindred and many friends will reflect on the peculiar charm of her christian character, and doubt not the triumph of her faith. Her burial was in Ironville cemetery by the side of her many loved ones.
