Moses Sawyer Whitney, son of Silas and Sarah (Butler) Whitney was a descendant of Nicholas and Joyce (Baker) who arrived in the United States in the late 1620's from England.
He married Mary Hoyt (born about 1823 in New Hampshire, died 12 October 1883 at Chickasaw, Iowa, before his enlistment.
Together they had two sons
Carlos Whitney, born about 1853 in Iowa and died about 1860.
Lincoln D Whitney, born 4 August 1861 Iowa, died 12 April 1944 Los Angeles, California. In 1900 he married Eliza Biggs Johnston, but there seems to be no children recorded.
On 23 October 1862, Moses enlisted as a Private in Troop B, Sixth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War.
Sickness is the reason recorded for him answering his final roll call at Scott, Iowa, United States on 8 May 1863.
He is buried at Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois, and also has a memorial erected by his family at Wells Cemetery, Canaanm Grafton, New Hampshire.
