Tiny Newfield is sleepy, yet full of surprises
Author: MEREDITH GOAD Staff Writer
At the Amos Straw Country Store, built in 1832, you can still buy a pickle from a barrel and play a leisurely game of checkers. The country store is one of three buildings that don't require a ticket, so local children flock there for penny candy.
A showpiece of the museum is the 1894 Armitage-Herschell "steam riding gallery," more commonly known as a carousel, which is the second oldest in the United States. (The oldest is on Martha's Vineyard.)
Three times a day, Janet Maxfield, a museum employee who also runs the general store, plays organ music and turns on the carousel so visitors can see how it works.
I.H. Fenderson of Saco ordered the 24-horse, collapsible carousel so he could take it to country fairs and carnivals.
"It took him two years before he actually got it because of the demand of people wanting these carousels," Maxfield told one group of visitors.
"It cost him $2,000, and he traveled with it for the next 26 years throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts."
The carousel was donated to the museum by the Fenderson family in 1975 and took 14 years to restore. The hand-carved horses have glass eyes and real horsehair tails.
The public is allowed to ride the carousel only once a year for $3 - quite a bit more than the original ticket price of 5 cents, but still a bargain. This year, the public rides will be offered on Oct. 1.
