Enoch Straw and Betsey Welch were my great, great grandparents. My family line is through their son William (General) Jackson Straw.
William Jackson Straw was born 6-15-1850 in Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin. He died 10-29-1917 in Washington County, Arkansas. Death Cert. # 1013. The last family home is now part of Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas.
William was married 1-8-1874 by Minister J.N. Busby in Jasper County, Iowa to Elizabeth Jane Kettner. Recorded in Vol. # 2, marriages records for 1870-1878 on page 440.
Elizabeth Kettner was born 2-14-1850 Logan, Clinton Co. Pennsylvania to Andrew Kettner and Mary Gladfelter. Elizabeth died 11-3-1920 in Okmulgee, Okmulgee Co, Oklahoma. Her body taken back to Arkansas to be buried next to William. They are buried in the Friendship Church Cemetery near West Fork, Washingtion Co., Arkansas as is William's older brother John F. Straw.
William and Elizabeth had 9 children. Elizabeth had 2 children before they married. Their children are as follows:

# 1. Lillie May Straw born 8-18-1874 Nevada, Story Co. Iowa. Died 6-15-1966 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Burial in the Okmulgee Cemetery. Lillie first married William Griffin on 9-19-1900 in Polk Co. Missouri, recorded Book 1 page 366. They had one daughter Nora born on 7-31-1903 she died 2-2-1994 Bethany, Oklahoma. She married first Floyd Hudgspeth in 1920. Later married Robert Stephens by 1922. and they had 5 children, Ollah, R.C.(Robert, Jr.),Billie June, Wyonia and A. J. who died as an infant.
Lillie after the death of William Griffin married Charles Cornell.

# 2. Mary Elizabeth Straw born 11-1-1875 Marshall County, Iowa and died 10-11-1911 Nevada, Story County, Iowa. Death cert. # 00194. Burial in Nevada Cemetery. She married 9-28-1893 in Story Co. Iowa to James Franklin Frink born August 1871 and died 12-24-1935. He is buried in Laure Hill Cemetery in Des Moines, Polk Co. Iowa They had 9 children; 1. Jessie Loren 1894, 2. William Edward 1895, 3. Henry Leroy 1897, 4. Lillie M. 1899, 5.Harvey Lester 1901, 6. Herbert 1903, The next 3 daughters birth years are from the 1910 census, 7. Hazel about 1906, 8. Ruby Irene about 1908. 9.Marie about 1909, she wasn't in the 1920 census.
James after the death of Mary remarried to a Maude UNKNOWN last name. James's parents where Jessie Loren Frink and Princess Lucetta ?.

# 3. Ida Frances Straw born 1-1-1878 Nevada, Story Co., Iowa died 11-6-1952 Wishart, Polk Co, Missouri. She married James (Jim) Mathrew Lane 2-11-1900 in Polk Co. Missouri. Recorded Book 1 page 313.
James Lane born 1-6-1875 and died 10-2-1953 Wishart. They are buried in the Enon Cemetery at Wishart. James's parents were Joseph Lane and Sarah Mackey.
James and Ida had no children. But Ida's sister Clara's son James Booth lived with them.

# 4. John Greenleaf Fairfield Straw was born 6-25-1880 in Logan, Marshall Co. Iowa. He died 4-4-1953 Wishart, Polk Co. Missouri. Burial in the Enon Cemetery at Wishart.
The earliest records in Iowa he is listed as John Fairfield Straw, named after his uncle John F. Straw. But in later records and in the family bible listed as John Greenleaf.
John was first married 9-30-1903 at Hermitage, Hickory Co, Missouri by Joseph S. Hartman, Probate Judge to Julia L. Bastion.
Julia was born 3-8-1885 and died 6-13-1905 Pittsburg, Hickory Co. Missouri. She is buried by her sister in the Antioch Cemetery, Pittsburg, Missouri. She died of Tuberculosis. Her obit stated that after suffering with it for a year she wanted her death to come soon to end her suffering. She was the daughter of Charles Bastion.
John remarried on 6-9-1909 in Pratt, Pratt Co.,Kansas by Justice of the Peace L.H. Bloxom to Mary Pearl Huffman. They divorced some years later. John never had children.

# 5. William Straw, Jr. born 4-26-1882 Logan, Marshall Co. Iowa. Died 5-5-1882. Have never found his burial place. But he is listed in the old Straw family bible. Stated he lived 9 days.

# 6. James Franklin Straw born 6-11-1884 Nevada, Story County, Iowa. He died in Chicago, Illinois between 1966 and 1970. My uncle Walter used to go visit him in Chicago but in the late 1960's on the last trip Walt found out that he had died and was buried in a paupers grave. Walt's oldest son doesn't not remember where in Chicago he was buried.
James was married 6-11-1907 by Minister W.F.Brown in Pratt, Pratt Co., Kansas to Effie Armstrong.
They had one son Merle J. Straw born 8-8-1907 in Kansas and died 7-26-1977 in Bradenton, Manatee Co., Florida. A long time Navy man he was cremated and his ashes scrattered at sea. He died without any next of kin in Florida.
The state hire a genealogical firm to locate family on his mother and father's side for his estate. My mother was contacted.
Effie remarried by 1920 to Charles McAllister and was living in New York State. Merle's estate records stated she later married a Hugh Smith. Have not found her burial site.

#7. Andrew Jackson Straw ( my line) was born 5-12-1886 Nevada, Story Co., Iowa. Died 3-3-1948 Spavinaw, Mayes Co., Oklahoma. First buried in Fairview Cemetery in Pryor, Mayes Co., Oklahoma. But in the 1960's his body was moved to the Friendship Cemetery between Preston and Pratt, Pratt Co., Kansas.
He married 8-7-1910 in Prseton, Kansas by Rev. E. P. Van Vrankin to Eva Grace Haynes. Eva was born 10-30-1890 and died 2-27-1986. She was the daughter of Samuel Coons Haynes and America Catherine Sandefur. The Haynes family were the founders of Haynesville, Pratt Co., Kansas. Eva is buried in the Friendship Cemetery also.
Andrew (Andy as he was called) and Eva had 6 children. All have pasted away.
1. Orville Wayne Straw born 6-18-1911 Preston, Kansas. Died 9-9-1979 Vinita, Craig Co. Oklahoma. Burial in Fairview Cemetery, Pryor, Mayes Co. Oklahoma. Married Frances Hescock/Webb in Oregon. They had 2 babies, 1 died at birth and 1 before birth, a son and daughter. They had one daughter Melda who is still alive. No Info will be given here about her.
2. Ruby Irene Straw was born 1-16-1914 Preston, Pratt Co., Kansas. She died in a car wreck 1-4-1958 San Bernardino, California. She married Martis Christensen on 6-13-1932 in Pratt, Kansas. Martis born 11-26-1911 in Kansas and died 1-4-1972 in L.A. California. They are both buried in the Enduring Faith Section of the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angles, California
They had one son Eldon L. Christensen born 8-18-1936 in Pratt Co., Kansas and died in 5-15-1989 Detroit,Wayne Co. Michigan. Eldon age 28 born 1936 married Mary A. Burrows-Copenhaver age 29 born 1935 in Los Angels on 3-3-1965. Registrar # 7604 State file # 20681. They divorce on August 1966 in Los Angels. Case # 693250, State file # 060819. They had one son, don't know his name.
Ruby and Martis had one daughter Carol, she married a Mr. Worthy and had son Lee and daughers Stephanie and Patricia. Carol later married Edmond Deranek. Edmond born 3-18-1928 and died 12-19-1978 in California. Carol remarried and is still alive, so no info will be given here.
3. Walter Leroy Straw born 4-20-1915 in Preston, Pratt Co. Kansas. Died 2-23-1971 Douglass, Kansas. He married Katerine Beley on 4-14-1944 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She is still alive so no info will be given. They had 5 children Jim, Andy, Wayne, Margaret and Betty.
4. Mary Jane Elizabeth Straw ( my mother) born 2-24-1917 Preston, Pratt Co., Kansas. Died 3-3-1992 Pawhuska, Osage Co. Oklahoma. Buried Friendship Cemetery, Pratt, Pratt County, Kansas with her parents. Married Claude (Jake) Englehardt on 12-30-1937 at Pryor, Mayes Co. Oklahoma. Jake born 2-24-1915 Salina, Mayes Co.,Oklahoma to Walter Jackson Englehardt and Bernetta Hogan Sisco. Jake died 6-15-1986 Bixby, Tulsa Co., Oklahoma. Body donated to science, remains cremated and buried in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Mary and Jake had only 3 children. Son Claude J. Englehardt, Jr. known as Jeff born 1945 Pryor, Mayes Co., Oklahoma. Two daughters Joy Fay 4-17-1953 to 6-3-2002 died in car wreck. And Eva Annette (me)1949.
5. Ruth Gail (Gail as she was called) Straw born 10-27-1921 in Olkahoma. Died 1-24-1985 Vinita, Craig Co, Oklahoma. Married 3-30-1937 Pryor, Mayes Co. Oklahoma to Stanford White. Born 3-3-1915 in Arkansas and died 2-2-1993 in Joplin, Missouri. Both are buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Pryor, Mayes Co. Oklahoma. They had 4 children of which 3 died as babies, a daughter unnamed born 2-4-1938 died same day, a son Darrell Dean born 5-25-1940 died 5-27-1940, a son Alvin Lee born 4-18-1941 died 4-23-1941. They had one daughter Barbara JoAnn born 11-25-1937 and died in the car wreck with cousin Joy on 6-3-2002. She married Bob Hughes on 1-1-1954. He was born 3-15-1934 in Oklahoma and died 8-18-1972 in Farmington, New Mexico. Buried back in Oklahoma. The had one daughter Deb and son's Stan and Darrell. They are still alive, no info will be given.
Barbara and Bob divorced and she remarried 10-19-1971 in Enid, Garfield Co., Oklahoma to Paul Comstock. Paul and Barbara are buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Pryor, Oklahoma. They had one daughter Gailene.
6. Bonita Nadine Straw born 1-3-1931 Preston, Pratt County, Kansas. Died 4-2-2002 Bethany, Oklahoma Co, Oklahoma. Burial in Fairview Cemetery, Pryor, Mayes Co., Oklahoma between brother Orville Straw and sister Gail Straw-White. She married Hugh Dean Ballard. Dean as he was called was born 6-19-1927 and died 12-10-2001 in Jay, Delaware Co., Oklahoma. They had 4 children, Larry, Raymond, Joyce and Jerry. Larry has passed away. The rest are alive, no info given. Bonita (Bonnie as she was called) was lastly married to a Mr. Cooper.

# 8. Clara Bell Straw was born 7-24-1889 Nevada, Story Co., Iowa. Died 5-15-1990 at the age of 101 years 9 months and 14 days. The last person in the state of Missouri to drawl a Civil War Vetern's pension. Buried in the Enon Cemetery at Wishart, Polk Co. Missouri, She married Clyde J. Booth 9-9-1905 and they divorce by 1915. They had 4 children, Goldie 1906,Viola 1909 Glen Raymond 1910, and James in 1911. Clara then married Charles Parker Pool on 8-28-1915 in Washington Co. Arkansas. She was about 25 and he was 71 years old. Charles born 3-27-1844 and died 1-18-1933. They had 5 children before he died. Charles Thomas, Earnest John, Florence, William and Garland. Son Charles died in 1944 the rest are living.

# 9. Mable Florence Straw was born 5-31-1891 Nevada, Story Co. Iowa. Mable died 3-5-1984 Vislia, Tulare Co., California. She married Virgil S. Legan on 9-9-1912 in Wellington, Kansas. Virgil born 8-7-1886 in Missouri to John Legan and Sarah Elizabeth Ball. Virgil died 1-4-1950 Leonard, Shelby Co., Missouri. Burial at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Russellville, Cole Co.,Missouri.
Mable and Virgil had two daughter Beulah May 1913 and Beatric 1923. Bea is still alive.
Virgil left his family in New Mexico in the late 1920's to look for work in Colorado. They presumed that he had died and was never heard from again. However, he turned up in Illinois in 1930 married to Oma Reed who was his wife at the time of his death.
As far as Mable knew he never divorced her. They tried to find out what happened to Virgil all those long years. It wasn't until I found his census records and his death record that we knew he returned to Missouri. Mable never remarried.

" DIED: Last night Enoch Straw, aged over 92 years. He was one of the oldest residents of this county and was well known for his sterling integrity and uprightness of character. He had been quite feeble for some time and has now passed peacefully away to that land from which there is no return."
OBIT: # 2. Ran: Wednesday, October 5, 1887 in the Nevada Representative. Nevada, Story Co. Iowa.
"ENOCH STRAW, father of W.J. Straw, died Friday morning, Sept. 30, 1887, at the advanced age of 89 years. His death was mainly the result of old age. He was a native of Maine and had been a resident of this county nineteen years. His wife to whom he was married 66 years ago, survives him, though in feeble health. The funeral exercises took place Sunday."
