Maria Nichols

  General Notes:

Per town recds of Marlboro, VT the following item appears in Vol 1 pg 264." State of Vermont. Be it remembered that at Windham County of Marlboro in the county aforesaid on this 5th day of December 1805 Oliver Underwood and Mariah Nichols both of South Marlboro were duly joined in marriage by me Eli Halladay Justice of the Peace."

She is buried in the Leggett Cem (Chestertown Rural Cemetery), Chestertown, NY beside her husband Oliver Underwood and two of her children. Her stone is flat on the ground and badly broken but it is possible to see the following:

AE 54 years

If her date of birth is correct as c 1785 this would give a date of death as 1839. (cemetery records also give 1839 as dod) I have since learned that her body and that of her husband were removed from another cemetery in 1905 and transferred to Chester Rural. It is probable that the former Cemetery was the one on Thieriot Avenue called the Old Burying Ground. It had burials as early as 1800 or 1811 and was discontinued in 1905 with all the graves exhumed and the remains removed to the Rural Cemetery south of the Village.

Maria married Oliver Underwood, son of Jonathan Underwood and Deborah Morgan, on 5 Dec 1805 in Halifax, Windham County, Vermont. (Oliver Underwood was born on 4 Apr 1779 in Marlboro, Windham County, Vermont, died on 1 Sep 1859 in Chestertown, Warren County, New York and was buried in Chester Rural Cemetery.)
