Son of Daniel Gay and Mary Ann Symonds. Some records list his mother's maiden name as "Symonda", but John's marriage record and death records lists her name as Symmonds. The death record for John's daughter, Leslie, lists his middle name as 'Perely'.
In 1850, John lived with his parents and siblings in Acworth, Sullivan, New Hampshire.
On September 19 1862, John enlisted as a private in Company H, 5th Massachusetts Infantry. He served as a member of the Union Army for 9 months, 22 days, and mustered out on July 2, 1863.
John was living in Marlow, New Hampshire when he married Lois Scripture on July 13 1864 in Acworth, Sullivan, New Hampshire. Their children include a daughter, Clara Ann.
The 1870 US Census shows John, Lois, and their daughters living in Surry. His occupation is listed a 'farmer'. In "The History of Surry", published in 1925 by the Town of Surry, New Hampshire, Frank Burnside Kingsbury states that John and his family moved to Surry in 1868, where he was a partner in Harrison N. Scripture's grist and lumber mill for four years.
By 1890, John his family lived in Keene, Cheshire, New Hampshire. The 1890 Census of Union Veterans and Widows of the Civil War notes that John suffered a disability described as "chills and fever" as a result of his service during the Civil War.
In 1910, John worked as a janitor in Keene. After Lois died in 1917, John lived with his daughter Clara and her family in Keene.

John married Lois Maria Scripture, daughter of Charles Scripture and Abigail Priest, on 13 Jul 1864. (Lois Maria Scripture was born on 5 Jan 1843 in Nelson, Cheshire, New Hampshire, USA, died on 19 Mar 1917 and was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Keene, New Hampshire.)
