Johanna Ham was born at Great Falls, N.H., June 11th, 1827. She was married to Joseph Straw at Plymouth, N.H., July 4th, 1847. The family removed from Plymouth to New York City and they lived here five years. From New York City they moved to Manitowoe county Wis. It was while here that Mr. Straw, answered his country's call and enlisted in the Union army. He belonged to the 22nd Wisconsin Infantry. In the spring of 1870 Mr. and Mrs. Straw with their family came to South Dakota, locating on a farm three and one half miles northwest of Canton and were pioneers in the building of this state. In 1899 they left the homestead and moved to Canton. After the death of Father Straw, which occurred April 29th, 1911 the mother made her home with her son E. J. Straw and in 1919 she went to live at Long Beach, Calif. Here she made her home with another son, L. B. Straw. Had this aged mother lived one more day she would have reached her ninety-sixth birthday. She was victorious in life and peaceful in death. One of the happy moments of her life was when the family had a reunion at Long Beach, to celebrate her ninety-fifth birthday.
Three sons mourn the loss of this good mother, LeRoy and Walter, both of Long Beach, and Ernest, of our city.
In the death of sister Straw, Canton M. E. church losses its oldest members, she belonging to the M. E. church for 85 years. We may truly say of her, "She was steadfast in faith, joyful through hope, patient in tributation, clear in her testimony of God's saving grace and keeping power. She was a faithful wife and devoted mother. All her children call her blessed." Well may we say Let me live the life of the righteous and let my last end be like her's.
