George H. Beers, an old resident of New Albany, and a veteran of the Civil War, died last Wednesday at his home, at 15 DePauw Place. Capt. Beers had been in poor health for the past three years from the effects of an attack of paralysis, and for several weeks before his death he had been seriously ill. The end was not unexpected. Capt. Beers was seventy-eight years of age and was a native of Bridgeport, Conn., but had lived in New Albany and Floyd County the greater part of his life. During the Civil War he commanded a company in the Fifty-third Indiana Regiment, and for many years after the war he was employed at the Government Quartermaster's Depot in Jeffersonville. He was a member of Sanderson Post, G.A.R., and also a member of Rowena Lodge, Knights of Pythias. Two years ago Capt. Beers and his wife celebrated their golden wedding and the death of Mrs. Beers followed a few weeks later. He is survived by ten children, Misses Mary, Martha, Kate, Carrie and Bertha Beers, Mrs. Newton Stephenson and Harry J. Beers, of New Albany; Mrs. P. S. Everest of Ashland, Wis.; Charles R. Beers, of St. Louis, and George H. Beers, of Alameda, Cal. The funeral was held at the family residence and the burial was in Fairview cemetery. The Rev. Charles J. Armentrout, pastor of the Third Presbyterian church, conducted the service. - Public Press 01 Jul 1914 p5c2
