census 1880 living Canton, Lincoln Co per "History of Dakota territory" by Geo W. Kingsbury, Vol V (1915) excerpts: "Among the well established real-estate men of Lincoln Co. is Ernest J. Straw, who has maintained an office at Canton for the past fourteen yrs and receives a liveral share of patronage from investors and homekeepers. He also deals extensively in automobiles, having now the largest concern of this character in the county, his partner being Ed L. Wendt (MY NOTE: his bro-in-law) Mr. Straw is a native of ....WI...youngest of three sons whose parents were Josiah and Joanna Hann Straw, both of whom were natives of NH..... "A little lad of but three yrs when the family home was established here...acquired his preliminary education in the district schools of Lincoln Co. This knowledge was supplemented by a course of study in Augustana College at Canton. After completing his education, he engaged in the men's clothing and furnishings business in canton on his own account, thus spending four yrs. He next engaged in farming for five yrs and still owns a valuable tract of 320 acres in lincoln Co and in additon 480 acres in hand Co. In 1900 he left the farm and rem to Canton where he began handling real estate on his own account, having as his partner Ed. Wendt...Mr Straw and his partner also dealt in automobiles, selling more than any other firm in the county...he also owns stock in the Farmers Lumber Co...occupies one of the finest residence properties in Canton...member of Masonic body..enjoys fishing and hunting and known as man of integrity... The biography does not mention any children.
