CHASE MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN AT SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT

"The Chase memorial fountain, the erection of which in the public square of
the town, was completed on Friday, July 18, 1913. by the Harrison Granite
Company of New York, is a beautiful memorial to a family that holds a
prominent place in the history of Springfield, Vermont, and was provided for
in the will of the late Charles Sherwin Chase of Detroit, Mich., son of
Barton W. Chase and grandson of Dr. Leonard Chase, a leading physician in
Springfield from 1823 to about 1870, nearly fifty years.

In addition to the bequest of $2500 to the town for this fountain, Mr. Chase
gave $2000 to the Springfield library and $1000 to the Summer Hill cemetery.
These amounts have been paid to the proper officials. He also gave $100,000
to a Detroit hospital.

THE FOUNTAIN

On the north side of the fountain is a large watering trough forming a part
of the base; on the east side, the base is hollowed out to make space for a
small trough near the ground for small animals; on the south side a bubbling
fountain is provided for the convenience of the public.

Four Doric columns rest upon the four corners of the rectangular base. Each
shaft is surmounted by a square capital upon which rests the entablature.
The entablature is divided into architrave, frieze and cornice. The
architrave is a plain rectangular block, relieved only by small guttae. The
frieze is divided into triglyph and metope and each metope contains a
medallion in bas-relief. The cornice is quite elaborately molded and is
surmounted by a rectangular cap. (Whew! Don't ask me cuz I don't know)
The design throughout is strictly Doric and all of the essential features of
that order have been preserved. Above the base design is an almost exact
copy of the wall of the Parthenon on the Acropolis at Athens.
The fountain stands 13 feet high and on the south side is the following
inscription:
Erected A.D. 1913 at the bequest of CHARLES SHERWIN CHASE of Detroit, Michigan as a memorial. Presented to the Town of Springfield, Vermont In Memory of His Father BARTON WALKER CHASE.
