Anabel Mers Goertz, 81, died Feb. 24 at the Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.
She was born Dec. 13, 1923, in Torrington, the daughter of John Calvin and Elva Effa (Enix) Mers. She was reared and educated in country schools on the Slater Flats south of Wheatland and graduated from Wheatland High School in 1942.
Following graduation, she went to California to work in a bank and then returned to Wheatland where she worked as a telephone operator during World War II.
Mrs. Goertz was married Jacob Goertz on Sept. 24, 1946, in Billings, Mont. They resided and farmed on the Slater Flats and then in 1983 they started wintering in Pharr, Texas.
She was a member of the Slater Women's Club and American Missionary Fellowship.
She enjoyed card games, square dancing, music, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Goertz is survived by her husband, Jake of Wheatland; four children, Linda Tauger of Wheatland, Rex Goertz of Fort Worth, Texas, Gregor Goertz of Wheatland and Melody Matheson of Morrill, Neb.; one brother, Ed Mers of Riverton; 12 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one stepgreat-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her mother on June 4, 1944, and her father on June 8, 1949; and two sisters, Ruth Straw and Nelle Bolich.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Christ in Wheatland with Pastors Delbert Dick and Scott Hirano officiating. Interment will be in Wheatland Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Stefan Tauger, Taylor Goertz, Jason Goertz, Bill Johnson, Matthew Goertz, and Trevor Goertz.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be RaeAnn Patton, Nicole Tauger, Tori Goertz, Gwen Johnson, Josh Matheson, Casey Matheson, Walt Swan, John Baker, Jim Irvine, Gary Mers, Jim Collier and Bud Hitt.
Memorials may be sent to the Slater Community Hall in care of Lewanna West, 524 Richeau Road, Wheatland, WY 82201 or to the Platte County Relay for Life in care of Ellie Orr, 1054 Pine, Wheatland, WY 82201.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The Gorman Funeral Homes - Platte Chapel of Wheatland is in charge of the arrangements.
