RYE BEACH - Mary S. Flanders, 98, of 66 South Road, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at her home.
She was born July 13, 1903, in Manchester, the daughter of the late William Parker and Josephine (Perkins) Straw. She resided in Warwick, Bermuda, for 35 years and in Venice, Fla., and Rye Beach for the past 13 years.
She was a 1922 graduate of Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Conn., and spent a year at the American School in Florence, Italy.
Mrs. Flanders served as national president of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Medical Association in 1955; she was a member of the New Hampshire Chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America; president of the Girls Club in Manchester; president of the Elliot Hospital Associates in Manchester from 1940 to 1942; and was active in many community organizations in Manchester and Warwick.
The widow of Dr. Robert Flanders, who died in 1971, she is survived by one son and his wife, Dr. Robert and Susan Flanders Jr. of Englewood, Fla.; one daughter and her husband, Mary and Bert Cook of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Flanders, who was her constant companion; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Charles F. Flanders; one daughter, Gretchen Schleyler; and one great-granddaughter, Amanda Hutchens.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, June 23, at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew's By-The-Sea, Church Road, Rye Beach.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Elliot Hospital, 1 Elliot Way, Manchester, NH 03103 or to the charity one one's choice.
Assistance with the arrangements was by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.
