Mrs. Charlie F. Straw, age 87, of Gatesville, died Sunday, February 27, 2005, at a Gatesville hospital.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, at the First Baptist Church of Gatesville with Dr. Jay Riley and the Rev. Steve Dominy officiating.
Mrs. Charlie F. Straw was born in Rogers on December 23, 1917, the daughter of Charles Lee and Ola Lee Ellott Williams. She was reared in the Rogers community and graduated from Mary Hardin-Baylor University in 1937. She taught school in Buckholts and Johnson City before moving with her parents to Gatesville in 1942.
Mrs. Straw taught mathematics in Gatesville Junior High School until her marriage to Mr. Straw on June 15, 1946. They lived in Gatesville all their married life. She later joined her mother in opening and operating a retail business known as The Gift Box. She sold this firm in 1979 and retired from the business community.
She was a member of Gatesville's First Baptist Church for more than 60 years and taught the Bykota and Honeycutt Sunday School classes for a number of years. In church circles, Mrs. Straw's Bykota classes were known as "Charlie's Angels." She was active in Woman's Missionary Union work at the church. She was also a member of the Morris Federation and the Women's Forum. Mrs. Straw was an enthusiastic traveler and over the years she and her husband enjoyed many extensive trips with friends.
Survivors include her husband, F.W. (Jack) Straw; a cousin, James Elliott and wife Opal of Chilton; several nephews and nieces; and a host of friends.
