Merrill, 88, was first elected to the board in 1950. He served on and off from 1950-1961 until he became the city's director of V eterans Services, where he worked until 1995. Merrill was re-elected to the board in 1995 and has served consecutively since. He died from a heart attack Wednesday while he was at Newton- Wellesley Hospital, according to his wife Treva Merrill. He told the Newton TAB during his last campaign for the Ward 1 alderman-at-large seat in 2011 that he will never stop running for the seat.
"I've spent many years involved with community activities to support the values of our villages, neighborhood schools and high schools as well as local businesses," he wrote an OpEd piece in the Newton TAB about his candidacy for re-election in 2011.
Born in Newton, Merrill attended Cabot Elementary School, Underwood Elementary School, Bigelow Middle School and graduated from Newton High School. He was drafted into the military after graduating from high school in 1943. He served as a member of the US. Army Air Force until he was discharged in 1945.

Merrill served on the Programs and Services, Real Property Reuse and Land Use committees of the Board of Alderman.
Merrill leaves behind his wife Treva Merrill, who he was married to for over 60 years, a sister, who lives in Newton.
