Deceased Name: William L. Straw, 63, native of White Bird
MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho -- White Bird native William Lee Straw, 63, of Mountain Home, died of a heart attack Sunday while vacationing in Arizona.
He was born May 19, 1936, in White Bird, to Robert and Fern Straw. He graduated from Clearwater Valley High School in Kooskia in 1955, then joined the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Mountain Home.
He married Marie Heimgartner March 21, 1959, in Juliaetta.
He left the Air Force in 1959 and worked in Yellowstone National Park for Burgraff Construction. He later worked at the OK Tire Shop in Mountain Home, then opened a gas station and motorcycle shop, B and J's Service, in Mountain Home. In 1967 he went to work for Intermountain Gas Co. and retired after 31 years there.
He enjoyed tinkering in his shop and polishing his 1968 Mustang, spending time at his cabin, taking long drives, skiing and golfing and spending time with his family.
He was an active member of the Faith Lutheran Church and the Mountain Home Lions Club, of which he was president in 1979 and which honored him with its highest honor, the Melvin Jones Award, in 1998. He was a volunteer firefighter from 1970 to 1988, holding positions of lieutenant, captain and assistant chief. He was a member of the Soldier Mountain Ski Patrol for seven years and was a longtime member of the chamber of commerce, serving as its president in 1979. He was a founder of the Elmore County Impact Steering Committee, was grand marshal of Air Force Appreciation Day in 1991, and was selected as man of the year in 1993. He served on the city council later in life.
He is survived by his wife at Mountain Home; daughter Connie Cox of Idaho Falls; son Bryan Straw of Mountain Home; four grandchildren; sister Audrey Perrine of Mountain Home; and brothers Tim Straw of Clarkston and Butch Straw of Grangeville.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Roseanne Straw, and a grandson.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. (MST) Thursday at Summers Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel, in Mountain Home. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. (MST) Friday at the chapel. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
A luncheon will be held at 2:30 p.m. (MST) at Faith Lutheran Church School, 1190 N. Sixth E., Mountain Home.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Mountain Home Lions Club, P.O. Box 878, Mountain Home 83647.
