journal by Charles E. Lombard in 1874 is in a very neat handwriting, excellent spelling and grammar. He writes from Charlestown, NH and ends the journal indicating that the number of miles from Charlestown, NH to Atlantic, IA is 1,463 by road and 2,031 by boat.
He goes to "prayer meeting" many evenings and all day Sunday. Charles records occasionally sweeping the hall and building a fire in the hall. He often helps Scott with chores, who I believe is his brother. Charles attends a Singing School some evenings. He makes mention of working, drawing wood out of the woods, drawing ice, trucking around the village. Sometimes he works for people on an hourly basis at 20 cents per hour. On Monday, March 17, 1874 Charles received his sample case and "got one picture". After that he goes to various towns "canvassing", and starts selling pictures and frames. He visits and writes letters to a "dear Rosie".
Charles kept record in this journal of expenditures, "$1.05 Singing book, $1.00 singing school, .13 oranges, $7.75 sample case, $1.00 lodging, .46 sugar, .20 raisons. Charles also kept accounts for various people he worked for listing dates worked, amounts due, and payments received.
On Tuesday, August 23, 1874 Charles writes: "Today I started from Windsor Vt. to go Atlantic, Iowa." No entries then until September 15th, 1874 "Today I commenced work for H.M. Huntoon of Atlantic, Iowa". "
