Online "Northern New York Historical Newspapers," The Plattsburgh Sentinel, Fri, 22 Aug 1884, 5th Col, "HORRIBLE ACCIDENT!. A Woman Killed and Several Others Injured." "Isaac Spaulding and family, of Crown Point, consisting of himself and wife, his daughter Etta McDowal and son Frank, and two grand-children, a daughter of Mrs. McDowal and a daughter of Horace Moore, had been enjoying a family picnic, on Thursday of last week, near the place where Mr. Spaulding was born. On their returning home, some part of the horses' harness was broken, and a halt was made at a harness shop at the "upper hollow." A headstall was taken off for repairs, and Mr. Spaulding and Frank stood at the horses' heads. The horses suddenly jumped and got away, going towards their home on a run. They kept the road till between the DePautie barn, and the Brown house, where they ran into a pile of stones, throwing out the occupants of the wagon and demolishing it. ... Mrs. Spaulding struck upon her head and was instantly killed. Etta received serious injuries, and has since been unconscious. Mrs. Moore's daughter's shoulder was broken. Mr. Spaulding received a cut about the head; in fact, all were more or less injured. Drs. Warner, Page and Eaton were called and attended the sufferers. Another Accident Recalled Mrs. Spaulding was the mother of Stephen Spaulding, the horse-car driver who was injured a short-time ago in the railroad and horse-car collision at Waterford. The community at Crown Point was thrown into considerable excitement over this sad accident. The funeral of Mrs. Spaulding was largely attended on Saturday afternoon...."
