Lawrence Newspaper - Friday 13 Aug 1896 - published in Andover Townsman [http://andover.essexcountyma.net/townsman/townstrangedeath.html]
OR DROWNING? DANIEL PEARSON OF SOUTH LAWRENCE FOUND DROWNED IN FOSTER'S POND. Tuesday afternoon about six o'clock, Miss Abercrombie, domestic for Dr. Bancroft, who has a camp at Foster's Pond, observed a man row out from the shore. She imagined that he had gone out to fish, but presently he stood up in the boat and jumped overboard. He came to the surface once, then put up his hands, gave a shriek and sank. Miss Abercrombie along with Philips Bancroft got into a boat and reached the spot where the man sank but no sign of him was visable. They then returned to the shore and Philips Bancroft gave the alarm at Ballardvale. Word was sent to town and several went down to the pond with grappling irons. Although only in about six feet of water it was not until next morning that the body was found. It was identified as Daniel Pearson of South Lawrence. It appears Pearson was driven down to the pond late in the afternoon and had told his brother to come after him at half past six. His clothing was found on the bank and it hardly seems probable that Pearson had gone in bathing. It rather appears as a determined case of suicide since Pearson had twice before attempted his life, the last time about two months ago. Pearson was about 54 years old and had lived on the Saunders estate corner (?) of South Broadway and Andover Street for the past 12 years. For four years he has been in the employ of ex-Mayor Caleb Saunders. He leaves a widow, a son Harry, and a daughter, Mrs. Oscar Nichols.
