. JOSIAH MELVIN, b. Nov. 1773 (HOA); d. 31 March 1849; m. 16 April 1795 ESTHER MARSHALL of Nottingham West, NH, b. 16 Feb. 1776, d. 11 Oct. 1857, "a near relative of President Franklin Pierce" (HOA). "He was bound to his uncle by marriage, Ruben Spaulding, a hard master, who witheld from the friendless orphan at his majority the scanty pittance justly due him, setting him afoot in the world. He settled in Pelham, NH, removed later to Bradford, and in 1826 to Warner, NH, where he built a mill on a branch of Blackwater river, which bears his name. Children, per HOA: l. Esther Melvin, b. 11 Oct 1795; d. 13 Nov. 1846; m. 1818 Harvey Crosby, who d. 1 Feb. 1872, son of Seth and Mehitable (Kittredge) Crosby; 7 children. 2.
