Sarah A. Berry of Garland, ME age 21 yrs and widow of Arthur Berry who died in War applied for pension as a widow [Act of July 1862]. Arthur A. Berry was a Private Company D of Capt Isaac W. Haskell 20th Regt of Maine Vols

Arthur A Berry enrolled 22 July 1862 Co D. 20th Regt of ME Vols to serve 3 yrs; mustered in on 29 Aug 1862 at Portland; died Nov 1862 Philadelphia, PA of disease.Served in Battle of Antietem. the 2nd day after the battle of Antietem, after crossing the Potomac River they were driven back by the enemy and recrossed the river and on the night of that day the Regt lay on picket in a canal which was nearly full of water , jusing the banks as a breastworks. the mud in the canal was 6 inches deep and firing was kept up nearly all night...in consequence? of the exposure and fatigue that night a large number of the Regiment were taken sick and sent to the hospital. Among the number was above named soldier Arthu A. Berry. On or about that time or within a dy or two of the 19th of Sept 1862 he was attacked with chronic diarhhea and fever and was sent to the hospital.[testimony of Edward Fifield 1st Lt of Co D. 20sth Regt of ME Vols

Arthur married Sarah Augusta Straw, daughter of James Straw and Rebecca Longfellow, on 21 Dec 1861 in Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine. (Sarah Augusta Straw was born about 1842, died on 16 Jul 1873 and was buried in Maplewood Cemetery - Garland, Penobscot County, Maine, USA.)
