WARNER - Lloyd Harland Stone Jr., known as "Bud," died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the age of 83 after a long illness.
He was born Oct. 2, 1925, the fourth of four children, to Lloyd Harland Stone Sr. and Ethel May Roy of Webster.
He was predeceased by his brother, Roy Harland Stone, and his sister Doris P. S. J. R. Hamilton.
He is survived by his sister Theda Bassett of Warner.
Bud was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army 364th Field Artillery Battalion in the 76th Infantry Division, which crossed England, France, Belgium and Luxembourg in the freezing month of January 1945. His division entered Germany and fought many battles, most notably the Battle of the Bulge. The division continued its battles and marched to the border of Russia. He witnessed the devastation of Buchenwald concentration camp. The Battle of the Bulge marked the end of World War II in Germany, and he returned home to Webster. He received an honorable discharge, citing the military battles and campaigns of Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, and he received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal.
He was a master mason for more than 50 years at Harris Lodge 91 in Warner.
He married Edith Corrine Straw of Contoocook on Sept. 7, 1946. They had five children, Diana S. LeClerc of Sinclairville, N.Y.; Lloyd H. Stone III of Webster; Robin Lampron of Webster; Vickie Chidester of Honeyville, Utah; and Debra Booth Howell of Boscawen.
Edith and Bud were divorced, and he married Nancy Eileen Nolan of Nashua on Jan. 11, 2001. She was his companion for 36 years. They had one child, Sora Martindale of Shirley, Mass.
Bud lived in Webster most of his life.
He leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many devoted friends.
Bud showed great enthusiasm and zest for life. He loved his family, nature and gardening. He was a powerful and strong man who could work tirelessly and enjoyed good health most of his life.
A jack-of-all-trades, he was the deputy sheriff of Merrimack County from 1950 to 1960, helped construct the Blackwater Dam in Webster, and worked on heavy-equipment and construction projects. He could build or fix anything.
He will be fondly remembered and truly missed by those whose lives he touched. The essence of his life lives on through his descendants.
