Note of census taker on the sheet as follows:
"I traveled throuogh this county of Rice with an escort of six soldiers from Fort Harker under the command of Gen N. S. Miles. In the North East Corner of this county of Rice I found the cabins of 5 homestead settlers, four of whom I found at work at Bunker Hill Station in Russell county on the RR where I enumerated them but they will return to their homesteads in the month of September (and they informed me) and would have been glad to have been enumerated as residents of Rice County. Further south on the East Side of Rice County I found Mr Theodore Stemberg (sp) building a stone house and had up a large stone corrall for the protection of his stock from Indians, but as it was extremely dangerous for him to stay there unprotected, he spends most of his time at his father's in Ellsworth County where I have him enumerated, therefore his name is not entered on this sheet as one of the inhabitants of Rice county."

Croxton Pioneer Memorial Park
Grants Pass, Josephine County, Oregon
Moses Strew [no dates]
Croxton Pioneer Memorial Park is no longer considered a cemetery, but as a City Park. In 1856, this land was officially given by Thomas Croxton, one of many lasting ties between him and Southern Oregon history. Those names marked with an asterisk no longer have markers, except for two plaques installed with the names of all those known from the original cemetery. The cemetery was mapped by Fred Warner and Ron Cogswell in 1961, but by the earlier '70s, the cemetery had been so vandalized that it was decided to gather the remaining stones and embed them in a concrete circle at the entrance to the area, and convert the remainder of the property into a park. There are original lamp-posts, cast by Grants Pass Iron & Steel Works throughout the park. Some of our earliest pioneers and most haunting stones are in the circle. Thomas Croxton and his wife were exhumed many years after their deaths and moved to the Masonic Cemetery on Foothill Blvd. The park is located on Memorial Drive, off NE 9th Street, in Grants Pass.
