GIBSON CITY - Wilma Ruth Gilmore Straw, 88, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Gibson City and Buffalo, N.Y., died Saturday (Aug. 28, 1999) in Atlanta, Ga.
Her memorial service will be Thursday at H.M. Patterson's Oglethorpe Hill Funeral Home, 4550 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, Ga., followed by another service in the next few weeks in Buffalo.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (Atlanta Chapter), 1841 Clifton Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30329.
Mrs. Straw was born June 17, 1911, in Gibson City, the daughter of Craig M. and Ida Onken Gilmore. She married Henry K. Straw. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include her only daughter, Sara Straw Winship, Norcross, Ga.
Also surviving are three nieces, Phyllis Gilmore Dukes, Seattle, Wash.; Wilma Jean Gilmore Stark, Dundee; and Ruth Gilmore Davis, Gibson City.
Mrs. Straw was the fourth of five children. She attended Gibson City schools through high school at Drummer Township. In 1932 she graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.A. in English and History, where she also was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and active in other campus organizations. For one year after graduating, she taught in the last one-room schoolhouse in the Gibson City area, teaching grades one through eight.
Other career moves took Mrs. Straw to Peoria and Chicago, followed by a move to Washington, D.C., where she met her late husband Henry K. Straw. During World War II, Mrs. Straw functioned as a Senior Personnel Officer in the Office of Civilian Defense in the nation's capital.
Later she and her husband moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where their only child Sara was born, and eventually the family relocated to suburban Buffalo where they lived for many years.
Mrs. Straw was a member there of Central Presbyterian Church and was active in many church auxiliaries. She also was very active in local women's groups, such as the Suburban Women's Club and the Amherst Book Club.
At the age of 55, Mrs. Straw completed her master's degree in education at SUNY of Buffalo, and she did extensive substitute teaching in the suburban Buffalo secondary schools. She also enjoyed bridge and gardening.

Wilma married Henry Kirtland Straw, son of Lawrence Edmunds Straw and Edith Laura Van Fleet, on 14 Jan 1945 in Washington D.C. (Henry Kirtland Straw was born on 9 Nov 1909 in Carey, Wyandot County, Ohio, died on 3 Feb 1987 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, USA and was buried in Drummer Tonwship Cemetery in Gibson city, Ford County, Illinois.)
