Name, dob, pob, dod, pod and where buried and marriage and all children's info date per B.Baumann. She states last 5 children info came from Joel's Civil War papers and some mentioned in census records. At the time of his death he was said to have had 10 children.
Military pension:
enrolled in Co. E 2nd NY Cavalry (Harris Light Cav) 2 Sept 1864 at Plattsburg for term of one year. In Oct of 1864 in line of duty at Martinsburgh, VA he ruptured his right side groin while loading "forage and amunition" and was sent to the camp hospital where he remained one night and in the morning he was sent to Alexandria where he remained two weeks and from there he was sent to Chester? Hospital in Philadelphia, PA - was furloughed from there to go home to Ticonderoga, NY - remained there about six weeks - returned to Philadelphia and remained until he was sent back to Alexandria VA. He was discharged 5th June 1865. Since leaving Military service he has resided at Ticonderoga, Couny of Essex, State of New York. Now he cannot work at his occupation of miner as he is greatly disabled; prior to his service in the military he was a good, sound man of physical health. He hereby appoints himself as his true and lawful attorney. signed "his x mark". futher he is ae 54 - dark complexion - dark hair - dark eyes - 5' 9" tall, he is married - to Melissa Ann Bennett nee Sharp - married April of 1852 - living children John born January 1852 - Joel b. March 1854 - Emmann May 1855 - Dyer born 1857 - Katie August 1861 - Abbie Dec 1862 - Genette Dec 1864.
A sworn statement by Norman Hildreth of Crown Point,Essex Co, NYS "while on/at/or near (sic) in March 1865 at Winchester, VA Joel Bennett was pretty deaf and I had to hollar loud to make him hear me, he had also complained of rheumatism, since the Fall and he was lame, from sleeping on the ground in camp. I knew him before he joined up and he could hear very well and was not lame. After he was discharged I saw him lots in town and he was sorely tried by his disabilities and he could not work. I am 48 years and was a Private with Joel Bennett and I have known him many years." signed Norman Hildreth of Crown Point" (Joel was awarded his pension at $8.00 per month, with arrears) In 1904 he was receiving $12.00 per month. In 1905 George Sharp and "Elizzie" Bennett entered sworn statements for widow "Malissa" Bennett. she made "her x mark". 18 Oct 1906, Melissa re-affirms her pension - now 78 years and resides Crown Point. She says she married Joel Bennett 1st day of April 1853 by Justice of Peace Henry B. Hays (sic). In this "affidavit" George Sharp says he knew Melissa 50 Yrs and Elizzie Bennett says she knew her 31 yrs. Melissa received $8.00 per month pension.
