BRANT LAKE * Margaret E. Wicks, 73, passed away Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, at Glens Falls Hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born March 4, 1933, in Chestertown, she was the daughter of the late Martin and CARRIE (Haff) McAlley.
During her early years raising a family, Margaret was employed as a short order cook and chambermaid in the Chestertown and Brant Lake area, including the Silver Star Restaurant and Travelers Restaurant.
Later, she worked for the Greater Adirondack Home Health Care Aides of Glens Falls. After moving to Florida, she was employed as a nurse's aide in two nursing homes in the Orlando area for more than 10 years. Returning to the Chestertown area, Margaret was self-employed as a home health care aide in the North Country for many years.
She was a member of the Horicon Baptist Church of Brant Lake and a member of the Chestertown Emergency Squad (North Warren Emergency Squad) as an EMT for several years.
Margaret loved the outdoors in the Adirondacks, especially hunting, fishing and camping. She also enjoyed puzzles and crocheting.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Wicks; and by three brothers and one sister, Frederick, Frank, Joseph, and Irene Meade.
She is survived by 10 children: Donald Tower and his wife, Kathy, of Orlando, Fla., Margaret Monroe and her husband, Harry, of Brant Lake, David Tower and his wife, Kathy, of Chestertown, Robert Tower and his wife, Debbie, of Orlando, Fla., Carrie Tower of Warrensburg, Robin Hopkins of Orlando, Fla., Ricky Tower of Brant Lake, Rose Rising of Warrensburg, Samantha Wicks and Rickie Lee Wicks, both of Brant Lake; two sisters, Grace "Eunice" Engstrom of Lawrenceville, Ga. and Dorothy Mahoney of Hawaii; a special former son-in-law, of whom she was very fond, Ronald Hopkins and his wife, Karen, of Orlando, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Horicon Baptist Church in Brant Lake, with the Rev. Robert Hermann officiating.
Burial will be at Brant Lake Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
No calling hours are scheduled.
The family has suggested that for those who wish to send memorial contributions in Margaret's name, may do so, to the Horicon Baptist Church, Route 8, Brant Lake, NY 12815 or to the North Warren Emergency Squad, Route 9, Chestertown, NY 12817.
Arrangements are under the direction of Stafford Funeral Home, Inc. of Lake George.
