Obituary:
Corinne Underwood Grout Palmer was born November 10, 1910 in Olympia, Washington to Herbert George and Margaret Rouse Underwood and passed away on December 20, 2009 of natural causes complicated by a fractured hip at Puget Sound Healthcare Center in Olympia, Washington.
Corinne graduated from Olympia High School in 1928. While in high school she earned pins for excellence in typing and shorthand skills. From her OHS classroom on South Capitol Way, she watched the construction taking place on the West Capitol Campus. Additionally, she earned awards for Red Cross life saving skills and attended Annie Wright seminars in Tacoma during the summer months. Shortly after high school graduation she went to work for the Olympia Veneer Plant on North Capitol Way in Olympia. She worked for about six months with no pay. She was "gaining experience". Her work history included employment for the State of Washington in the Agriculture and Transportation Departments. She retired from Olympia Brewery in 1978.
Corinne married Charles W. Grout on August 18, 1933 in Olympia. They settled on Madrona Beach Road on Eld Inlet where they lived for many years. Later, Corinne married Dan Palmer of Aberdeen and Olympia.
Corinne was one of Olympia's oldest seniors of Washington Territory pioneer descent. Her mother died when she was 3 years old and Corinne soon went to live with her paternal grandmother, Lillian Horton Underwood Mason. Helping to raise her were her Aunt Frankie Mason and great-grandmother, Emma Hartsock Horton. Over the years Corinne served as Griffin School PTA president in the mid 1940s, was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church Altar Guild and focused on her Washington Territory pioneer ancestral history, Daughters of the Pioneers Olympia Chapter #4, the State Capitol Museum, the Olympia-Tumwater Foundation and the Lacey Historical Society.
She was an accomplished seamstress and talented in making embroidery and knitted items for family members. Her gardening skills were dazzling, especially her rockery.
Corinne is survived by son David Grout (Sandy); daughter Gail Grout Brower Dahm (Ted); grandchildren Jeffrey Brower, Jenny Brower Schmidt (Chris), and Douglas Brower (Jennifer). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Michael, Kaitlin and Chelsea Schmidt; Nicholas Brower; nephew, Mark Grout; nephew Michael Underwood; and niece Marva Underwood Marichal. She was pre-deceased by father, Herbert George Underwood and stepmother, Loretta Cormier Underwood; brother, Lawrence Underwood and wife, Leda Underwood; and cousin, Jean Underwood. Also predeceasing Corinne were her first husband, Charles W. Grout; second husband, Dan Palmer; brother-in-law, Robert O. Grout and wife, Elizabeth; brother-in-law, Bill Grout and wife, Ernestine; and nephew, Gregory Grout.
Corinne's dedication to family, friends and historical organizations was never-ending and it is to "Mom" "Auntie" and "Grandma" that her family will forever remember and respect her for her patience, teaching, love and good deeds.
The family thanks staff at Capital Place Gracious Living where Corinne lived from 1995 to 2003; Olympics West Retirement Inn where Corinne lived from 2003 to 2008 and Puget Sound Healthcare Center where Corinne lived for 15 months.
