Research of John Komar: Buried Starbuck hill cemetery ( The cemetery is located on the Wallace farm, off of Starbuck Hill Road in Chestertown, NY., about a mile back into the woods, it is surrounded by a five foot high, rock and mortar fence, built in the 1930's by Mr. Starbuck, it has a steel ladder at one end for entrance. (JK 1998) ), married Sally born 1769, died 30 Apr 1847. (RWS) Peleg served in the 16th Regiment Albany Militia, and Col. Blairs Regiment raised for the defense of New York State frontier. He helped fell trees for Gen. Schuyler to thwart Burgoyne's march. The 1800 census lists Peleg with 3 boys and 3 girls. In letters sent from Juliette Baker daughter of Thomas Baker, she refers to Aunt Polly Baker (Levi's wife), Aunt Peasy (Peleg's wife), Aunt Mabel (Jeptha's wife) Uncle Levi and Uncle Jep (Jeptha). I believe that this links four of the seven brothers together, in addition at the Starbuck cemetery immediately behind Peleg and Sally are the marked graves of Levi Baker and three of his children. Also: Starbuck Hill Cemetery Visit of May 10, 2004 Jon and I went to find Peleg and Sally's grave site yesterday. We were able to get permission from the people who own the property to walk through their pasture and fields--maybe a half a mile or so one way. Jon's good nose was able to detect the possibility of an old town road 150 years ago. The cemetery is amazing: a great replica of how they built cemeteries years ago: 5 foot stone walls with stones every foot or so sitting on top...maybe to ward off evil spirits or maybe just for decoration. Peleg and Sally's grave stones are in front of a huge old white pine tree...the tree is gorgeous. It took four arm lengths to be able to hug the tree. We figured it was probably just a small starter around 150 years old. The cemetery seems mostly to have five or six families: Prouty, Smith, Bartlett, and some others, plus Peleg and Sally Baker and another Baker flat grave stone that listed several daughters. The parents were Levi and Lilly Baker. There were some grave stones as old as 1805. It hasn't been used for quite some time, maybe the early 1920s. It does give one a perspective that we are not just here for a short duration, but that our DNA goes on and on and on. It was a neat experience, for sure. Love Barb
