bullet  General Notes:

Aug 2010 via e-mail: Research of E. Ransford - coutesy of E. Howes. "One thing about David Smith . the IGI has his marriage to Jane Carr on 7 June 1840 and I would say this is correct and not 7 June 1839 as stated in his bio. This would make the 1840 census fall into place. He was still at home when the census was taken and married later that year. So in the 1840 census there would have been 4 Smith children and the others Town kids, Chester, Lucius, Sarah, Cynthia, Electia and Mary. I just found a son of James Smith and Sarah Straw, his name was David Smith born Dec 10, 1820 in Chatham Canada East. His parents James and Sally (Straw)Smith, formerly residents of Waterbury Vermont, and who were temporarily absent from that State , in Canada, at date of the birth of their son. This is on page 458. On page 834 it gos on to say that Edmund Town arrived in Shabbona Dec 1835 and that David Smith was a step son.

Cemetery, also known as Shabbona Grove Cemetery, is in Section 27 and is located on Shabbona Grove Road, West of Shabbona road, South of the Village of Shabbona Grove. The cemetery was established on the farm of David Smith: "Mr. David Smith and Eliza Jane, his wife, of Dekalb County deeded to M. W. Olmstead, B. Parks and Wm. Marks Trustees in trust and their successors in office for $1.00 (one dollar) a parcel of land described as follows, to wit: Being a part of the East half of the South West Quarter of Section 27 in Twp 38 North of Range three East of the 3rd Principal Meridian and bounded as follows: Beginning at the South West corner, and running thence North two chains and seventy five links, to a stone, thence East four chains and forty four and a half links to a stone and thence South two chains and seventy five links to a stone on the South line, thence West on the South line four chains and forty four and a half links to the place of beginning containing 1.222 acres more or less for the inhabitants of said town and vicinity to be used as a place to bury the dead.
David Smith Eliza Jane X Smith (her mark) Witness: Horace W. Fay Notary Public Dated 27 Jun 1856 Deed Bk. 22 pg 344."

1850 appears to have 2 listings for David Smith: Shabbona, IL with his family and also in Empire Canion, Eldorado county, CA [hewas known to have gone to CA for the Goldn Rush with his borther but both contrated Typhoid Fever while there and his brother died from it. David apparently lost his claim as a result of his illness but survived.]
