Virginia Fries Frazier, 71, St. Joseph, died Thursday, March 4, 1993, at a hospital in St. Joseph following a lengthy illness.
She was born Dec. 22, 1921, in Mound City to harry C. and Nell E. Feil Fries. She had lived in Holt County, including in the Forest City area, before moving to St. Joseph in 1959.
On Oct. 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to John W. Frazier. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Frazier received a bachelor's degree from Maryville State Teachers College; a master of arts degree in literature from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., where she was a John Hay Fellow; and worked toward her doctorate in Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.
Mrs. Frazier taught secondary education in Holt and Atchison counties, then taught in the St. Joseph School District for 27 years, retiring in 1985. She was chairman of the English department there for 20 years. Mrs. Frazier worked with the Red Cross in Washington, D.C., during World War II as a case worker and also was a volunteer in Holt County.
Her poems and short stories were published in a number of periodicals, and she wrote a book of poetry, "Choreographing the Nonsense." She also wrote and directed the pageant programs for the Oregon and Mound City centennials.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, St. Joseph; Questers; American Association of University Women, Chapter ED of the P.E.O. Sisterhood; Delta Kappa Gamma, a teacher's honorary sorority; and Mound City Order of Eastern Star. She also was a past president of Missouri Association of Teachers of English and was chairmen of the National Council of Teachers of English and the Council of Secondary School English Department.
Preceding her in death were he parents, and a sister, Harriett Henderson. She is also survived by a son, Jonathan E. Frazier, Kansas City.
Funeral services were held March 6 at Westminister Presbyterian Church, St. Joseph. The Rev. Krista Kiger officiated.
Interment was held at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mound City, Mo.
