Maurice Almon Douglass

From the Bennington Banner August 31, 1972 Maurice A. Douglass of Twitchell Hill, Shaftsbury, vice president and treasurer of Fairdale Farms Inc., died unexpectedly Wednesday night at Putnam Memorial Hospital at the age of 61. His name had become synonymous with Fairdale Farms and its predecessor, Fillmore Farms, for many years. His dedication over these years in its development was well known. He was known over a widespread area in the dairy products business field, and had served in many capacities of trust with the firm. Mr. Douglass was born in Stowe, Feb. 19, 1911, a son of the late Willis M. Douglass and Frances O. (Sherbut) Douglass, who survives. His early education was in the Stowe-Morrisville area and coming to Bennington, he had attended local schools and was a 1928 graduate of Bennington High School. His marriage to the former Dorothy S. Harrington was on June 14, 1930 in Shaftsbury. He was president of the Greater Bennington Association in 1960, and from 1955 to 1960, he was chairman of the Bennington County chapter, American Red Cross. His contributions of service to worthwhile causes was evidenced many times. He was named a trustee of Bennington Museum in 1964 and possessed a vast knowledge of history of the area. Mr. Douglass was a member of the First Baptist Church and a trustee and corporate clerk since 1940. Besides his wife and mother, his survivors include, two daughters, Mrs. Normand L. (Joanne) LaCroix of Bennington and Mrs. Raymond R. (Judith) Sutton, Jr. of California, two brothers, Francis of Bennington and George of Pittsfield, Massachusetts; one sister, Mrs. Hollis (Hazel) Armstrong of Bennington, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
