bullet  General Notes:

1860 census she is living in Linn county, IA and not with her family.

The following letters were passed to me Nov 1999 by B. Baumann and per her were found in an old trunk ( in Town of Chester, Warren Co. NY) by descendents of Nancy Elvira Duncklee Bennett who married Royal Zebulon Bennett. The letters were sent by the descendents to the Morman Church in Utah for preservation and copies of them were forwarded to B. Bauman; they are letters written by Huldah Ann Duncklee Kellogg of Shellsburg, Iowa to her sister back in Brant lake, NY
10 June 1887
Dear Sister Elvira,(first part omitted as too personal)...before Mother died she never had one good night of sleep. She had complained of her stomach several years ago before she would give up that anything was the matter. the doctor said she might live to be well over a hundred if she would give up tobacco. (Rebekah Duncklee smoked a white clay pipe. it was said she probably died of stomach cancer) You know she was eighty last when she left us. The day before she died she said as she saw the sun in the west, "I do so dread the nights." This is a lock of her hair. I cut it from her head after she died. I also sent one to Martha. Your sister Huldah
20 August 1889
Dear Sister Elvira
It has been a long time since I heard from you. I have bad news to tell you. Libbie(Elizabeth Stackhouse) died 17 Aug 1889 in Shellsburg, Iowa; she was wife of Huldah and Elvira's brother Daniel Duncklee) died last saturday eve at 9 O'Clock. You know the Fall before Mother died she suffered a stroke. The doctor gave her medicine but she stopped taking it because she felt so good but that "savings" cast dearly. Cousin Betty Clark and I went to visit last week. Awhile ago they had their picture done - 'tis Libbie, Dan and Almira. Aren't you all going to have one taken so we can see how you all are doing? This is a very good year for the crops. The blackberrys immense our largest picking was 313 qts for one day. We sold them 10 cents a qt or 3.00 a bushel. I have canned nearly a bushel today. Orrie (her son) married a year ago last winter. Allie ( her daughter) went out to see them in Nebraska last week, I never met her but she writes most every week and calls me Ma same as Orrie does. As I have several letters to write I will close. Hoping to hear from you soon. Your sister Huldah
Winter 1896
Dear Sister Elvira
Alonzo (her husband) is busy cutting wood he has quite a few cords to cut and Cy (Cyrus her son) is helping. He is a help to me and 'Lonzo cuts wood, does the water and evens churns once or twice a week. Dan (Libbies' husband) is living with his only daughter Almira Keys (Almira Elzora m. 1891 to George William Keys). they sold his farm and moved here in Center Point. Cousin Alonzo Duncklee and wife were over to visit. They said Dan didn't seem good. Cousin says Dan is going the same way as Mother his pipe never leaves his mouth and he even wakes to smoke in the middle of the nights. Poor Dan, he is so lonely since Libbie passed but he does take comfort in Almira's twins (girls). They will be 3 on April 1. Dan thinks there never was any as smart as his own. William our second son is home (from Nebraska) he lives on a 300 acre farm in western part of this county. He and his wife have a great deal of stock to feed so he can't visit. Once they did hire a man while they made a few visits among her folks who live in Kansas. Allie lives on a 120 acre farm in Wright County now. We are having a pleasant winter lots of sunshine the english sparrows are twittering around and seem happy. and now dear sister please write to me. Where are all those girls who used to. Nellie Harp isn't writing anymore. She said Mrs Stockton was grandaughter to you. She is one of James girls if I remember right. Love to you all your sister Huldah

Dear Sister Elvira
Your letter dated April 15th came to hand on the 22nd, my birthday. I was awfully glad to hear from you and I now hope to see you inside of two months. I can't yet decide the time I will start. There is an Educational Excursion East the lst part of June - it goes to Asbury, New Jersey and if I can get the rates, so it will pay me to go that way, I will not reach you until sometime in July. I need to know your nearest Railroad Station and what to do and where to go when I leave the Main Line. You spoke in your letter about a stage. Cousin Ada in NH said there is a trolley between Caldwell, NY to Warrensburgh -- then I'll have to "stage it" about 12 miles to your place. I want you to instruct me the best to do. I have been nursing this mother and her baby boy. I only get 1.50 per day - the trained nurses get from 5.00 to 20.00. I hope when I get out to your place I can see all your children and grandchildren. It would be a good time for the family re-union. I expect some little chickens on Friday. I set them just before I went off working. Our strawberries are in bloom, also cherry and plums too. Love to you all your sister Huldah
