MOFFIT - Paul C. Van Ningen, 56, Moffit, died Jan. 1, 2012, at a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Paul was born June 18, 1955, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of Benjamin J. and Genevieve (Fogarty) Van Ningen. He was raised and attended school in Sioux Falls and earned his bachelor's degree at South Dakota State University, Brookings, S.D. Paul married Kathy Halma on Dec. 28, 1976, in Inwood, Iowa. They lived in Sioux Falls until 1978, when he and Kathy moved to Beulah, Wyo., where he started his career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the genetics lab. In 1983, they moved to Pingree, where he worked for Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge. In 1992, the family (with new son, Alex) moved to Moffit for Paul to work at Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge as project leader.
Paul was president of Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock School Board and a member of the North Dakota Chapter of the Wildlife Society.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy, Moffit; his sons, Adam (Meranda), Freeman, S.D., Aaron, Madison, Wis., and Alex, Fargo; his grandchildren, Blake and Piper, Freeman; his sisters, Darlene DeBuhr, Florine (George) Snyder, Carol Peters and Valerie (Earl) Stone; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and John; one sister, Gail Rae; an uncle and aunt, Earl and Mary Van Ningen; and two brothers-in-law, Frank Straw and Martin DeBuhr.
A second service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at Heritage Funeral Home, Sioux Falls, with burial to follow at Hills of Rest Cemetery.
